When did Bond stop smoking?

Is Connery's Bond the only one to smoke? Without going through every movie, I don't remember Moore or Dalton smoking and after them it would have been very unlikely.

I can remember Pierce smoking a cigar in DAD

Lazenby lit one up as well in the casino scene of OHMSS.

Not sure if Craig smokes though.

I think to get a 12a cert. There has to be no (or little) smoking.

Brosnan's Bond was the first Bond that didn't smoke, except for the cigar in DAD. Moore usually smoked cigars as well.

Connery smoked in pretty much all of his films and was introduced, iconically, with a cigarette between his lips.

Lazenby smoked in OHMSS and was, again, introduced with a cigarette.

Moore only smoked cigars, although I think only in LALD and TMWTGG.

    Dalton smoked cigarettes

Brosnan declared smoking to be a "filthy habit" in TND but he buys a cigar for Moneypenny in TWINE and smokes one himself in DAD.

Daniel Craig is the only Bond who hasn't smoked (even though he is a cigarette smoker in real life.) I very much doubt we'll see Bond smoke again onscreen.

I remember reading that LTK was the final Bond film to feature 007 lighting up a cigarette. They stopped incorporating cigarettes into the Bond films because they did not want to promote smoking, is what the article said.

    Ha! very true!
I remember reading that LTK was the final Bond film to feature 007 lighting up a cigarette. They stopped incorporating cigarettes into the Bond films because they did not want to promote smoking, is what the article said.

When Goldeneye was being produced, Martin Campbell absolutely refused to have Bond smoking in it, regardless of any concerns about character etc., because he is very anti-smoking. Pierce Brosnan also promised that his Bond wouldn't smoke. But Brosnan then appeared in Lark Cigarette adverts in Japan and on the cover of a cigar magazine before lighting up in DAD.

I think if they were going to have Bond smoke again, at all, then the scenes near the beginning of SF with Bond "enjoying death" would have been the time to do it.

Maybe that's why I like Roger so much...the first Bond not to smoke cigs. Unfortunate that Octopussy smoked. Filthy habit.

However, Sean's iconic intro in Dr. No is still cool as hell.

Lazenby's intro looks too much like a cigarette advert IMO.

Yes, both have gone the way of the dodo, though smoking is still a very popular past-time - I work in retail for my sins. :)

He's already virtually stopped having sex. By Bond 26 he'll be a Vegan relationship counsellor.

Hmmmmm....Fleming died at FIFTY-SIX from the cigs and rich foods and no exercise.
Given today's knowledge of how bad smoking is to overall health, not surprising to
me it's been given the heave-ho with respect to the cinematic Bond. It would really
be going back to almost the sci-fi realm to have Craig or future Bond's running
marathons on roofs and in streets and swimming and diving and having extended
fight scenes but then in their down times showing them puff away. I'm okay with
the drinking - though it's not great on the liver and it IS toxic, it's the only realistic
way they can show Bond using it as stress relief (as he uses sex at times).

Seems he's dropping the Hitman bit and going for the Full Monk. :))

Actually it would be cool having Bond and the smokers from Kensington Palace Gardens and Grosvenor Square meet for a quick fag and a bit of shop talk in Hyde Park. They could show each other their new scars and complain about not getting reasonable travel expenses per diem.

Despite smoking being common in the 1960's Bond does not smoke at all during Thunderball(No specific reason was ever mention for this change, and in You Only Live Twice he is seen smoking again). Also Bond never smokes once during Diamonds ae Forever, and after The Man with the Golden Gun does not light up again on camera until The Living Daylights.

It's hard to imagine a 21 century Bond ever smoking again. I only wonder why it took the producers so long to realise that.

Bond probably stopped smoking once it became more known what a stupid habit it is, and just isn't realistic for a fit, physically active Bond like Craig's to be smoking as much as Bond use too.

Exactley, ever thing Bond consumes is bad for him,
coffee, fois gras (high fat ) caviar (high salt) Jersey butter (81% fat minimum)
Martinis ,shall i go on ? cant wait for the day i see Bond order a double de-caff ultra skinny latte
with a toffu salad what next ,an electric car, because he can only get 13 mpg on the Aston :s

Why do you think it was the producers decision? It's generally down to the actors or the directors. Bond smoked cigars in the Moore films because Moore smoked cigars. Bond went back to cigarettes in TLD because Dalton smoked cigarettes. Bond stopped smoking in GE because Martin Campbell hates it etc.

Craig smokes in real life but I can't imagine Bond ever going back to smoking now. It's so old fashioned.

I think it was Gardener's first Bond book where he had him driving a Saab (!) and smoking filtered Turkish cigarettes. Yoikes.
Cigarettes have become, basically, a socially banned substance and so Bond couldn't smoke casually the way he used to. But he IS, as has been pointed out, a man who lives life to the fullest, enjoys alcohol and food no matter the repercussions, and sees his life as an on-off switch. Who knows when it will be thrown. In the books he takes benzadrine to keep him sharp during long bouts of stress, champagne and Baccarat. Fleming constructed Bond's character this way with a purpose
that Bond is not like one of us. He is driven by appetites that are insatiable while living on the edge every day. 'Life lived on the edge' is the definition of Bond by any measure.
Will he ever smoke on film again? Doubtful, but never say never.
The scent smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling - a compost of greed and fear and nervous tension - becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.
