Favourite STAND-ALONE Film

When people ask me what my favourite ever film is, I tend to say a james bond film. If they ask what my favourite film is apart from bond, I go for an Indiana Jones film. And if they ask to exclude that too, then I'd most likely pick a star wars film. My point is, my top favourite films (Probably about my top 20) consist of films from franchises, be that bond, indy, star wars, or back to the future. I don't know if others are similar to me in this way?

But anyway, I'm just wondering what people's favourite ever film is that ISN'T part of a film franchise, and is just a stand-alone film. Mine is personally Blade Runner. It just has everything going for it as far as I'm concerned - brilliant and intriguing story, great acting, great visuals (especially for their time), great feel, and the great Harrison Ford.

So what are your thoughts and opinions?

I'm not sure if I really have one all-time favorite film. One that comes awfully close is The Long Goodbye, a 1973 neo noir directed by Robert Altman and based on Raymond Chandler's 1953 novel of the same name. Though derided by many Chandler purists, I thought it was a brilliant updating, with Elliot Gould surprisingly effective as a re-imagined Philip Marlowe. The score, the acting, and the cinematography were all fantastic. Many hated the ending. I loved it.

Other contenders, off the top of my head:
    The Seventh Seal
    The Wild Bunch
    Groundhog Day

(Incidentally, my personal philosophy and attitude towards life is pretty much summed up in The Seventh Seal and Groundhog Day.)

    Where Eagles Dare (1969)

or is that part of the Clint Eastwood franchise?

Taxi Driver would be another top choice.

For me it would be something left-field like A Clockwork Orange (1971). I very much enjoy social commentary in films.

Have you heard the theory of playiong Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album while watching The Wizard of Oz with the sound down - it's meant to make more sense as a concept album, apparently.

Funny. I thought that it was common knowledge. Could all be BS of course. :)

Yes, I imagine that's a similar thing. I think it's the same as those guys on You Tube that play music backwards to hear messages that aren't really there. Spooky.

Very true. I find weird stuff kind of interesting, but that's just me. It fits in with the strange and bizarre world of James Bond surprisingly well. :)

This is difficult. I love "Life is Beautiful", "Psycho", the 1932 version of "The Mummy" (ignoring all the Hammer remakes of course!) and "Inception".
