You believe ALL that, Sir Miles? Internet speculation on all those points doesn't equal hard facts.
Believe all what ? I'm lost as to what you are refering ? ?:)
IFP don't offer LOTS of money - fact, not internet rumour.
Child DID say that he would sell Reacher to Cruise...again fact, not internet rumour.
Hang on - I thought you said Child WOULDN'T sell to Cruise and made some kind of binding, religious-almost pledge????
IFP don't offer LOTS of money - again, where does this "fact" come? You've seen the contracts (Benson back-in-the pre 97 days expected)? Reckon IFP offer LOTS more than I make, and possibly you make, though I guess you might view it as loose change, though.
But if you see them as pointless, why read them and give profit to the people you think are milking Bond?
What Thunderpussy said = can't criticise without reading them 8-)
When you've had a chance to read more of the continuations , then perhaps you'll agree with my view that the overall quality tends to suggest the project is futile
Sorry, I'm confused. HAVE you read DMC and Solo?
Also as far as IFP offering loads of money, how do you know that they do? I remember reading an interview with Gardner who said they didn't pay great money, and Gardner I believe ended up broke despite writing 14 novels for them.
"Thank you very much. I was just out walking my RAT and seem to have lost my way... "
Ummm... should I feel bad for enjoying the first five chapters of Faulk's book so far? ?:)
No, personally I'm looking forward to re-reading DMC. Haven't read it since 2008 so will be good to re-visit it. Look forward to reading your thoughts Chrisisall. Also hurry up and read SOLO.

A little off topic but I remember reading that most writers don't or can't
make a living from their writing. So I guess there in not too many big
pay cheques, except for the celeb kiss and tell stuff.

I also can't see Faulks, Deaver or Boyd struggling for money even before taking on Bond. I honestly believe Boyd wanted to do it for his love of the character. This comes over in SOLO.

Are YOU aware that people are entitled to differing opinions, and that there's nothing wrong with that????? 8-) As I've said, read some more of the continuations to add to the few you've read so far, then let us know your feelings.
But I'd strongly suggest you flatten Fleming's THE SPY WHO LOVED ME first, which in another thread you seemed to indicate you'd not got hold of.

Clearly you're not going to answer the question so I'll assume you haven't read Faulks or Boyd's efforts, in which case you can't really say if they are good or not. And as far as reading a few more continuation novels before I know my feelings, I've read Amis', 4 of Gardners, currently reading Benson's first and have read Faulks, Deaver and Boyd. So I know my feelings towards the continuation series and I'm very glad that IFP are still giving fans the chance to read new Bond novels.

I don't know where you getting this delusional idea I've not read DMC and SOLO just because I don't rate them and you do????!!!! ?:) 8-)
It's a simple case of having differing opinions. Just accept it, that's all.

Miles, if you say you've got a friend who knows the Fleming family and they've confirmed to him that they pay peanuts and he's relayed that to you, who am to dispute it?
Ummm... should I feel bad for enjoying the first five chapters of Faulks' book so far? ?:)
I'm listening to it on audiobook and have gotten to the tennis match, I really like how Faulks brings a sport to the mix, I've always thought of Bond as the ultimate sportsman.
I know this will make no sense, but I never thought of Bond as a Tennis player.
Although I agree I do love reading the scenes where Bond defeats a villain at something
they think they have the upper hand in. -{

We know he can play golf, ski, tennis.. Anything else?
No one has to buy these books to have an opinion, they can get them out the library. Unless there's a moratorium on them for six months until they hit the libraries, could be as my copy has not arrived yet....
The first 100 pages of DMC is alright chrisisall, but then Faulks loses interest, as if to say, okay I've proved I can do this, let's just get it over with.
I know I liked it. It had the feel of a Fleming Bond as well as the pacing. William Boyd did a good job with SOLO but it felt like it should have been set earlier in 007's career because he didn't seem as experienced as he would have been by 1969.

I just wanted to say that in retrospect (I finished DMC last month) I actually enjoyed the whole book! Yeah, there were a couple of saw that coming moments, but on the whole it was pretty good IMO! -{

The whole book?!? We need to talk )
"...the purposeful slant of his striding figure looked dangerous, as if he was making quickly for something bad that was happening further down the street." -SMERSH on 007 dossier photo, Ch. 6 FRWL.....
I thought it was a decent pastiche of Fleming's style, with conspicuous recycling of Fleming phrases, character details, and sentence structure ... though I don't think it added up
several whole sequences in themselves are Fleming recycled, particularly M's health kick from Thunderball and both the golf game (now tennis) and depressurised aircraft from Goldfinger ... I started to think it was more of a collage of rewritten Fleming scenes rather than an original story with a beginning middle and end.
the conceit of the period piece I did appreciate, following directly from Golden Gun, it develops Bond's recovery from grief and brainwashing, and M's still not completely trusting him to handle a mission ... it does not acknowledge Colonel Sun, but I think that book was published a year after this one takes place (1967), so it does believably fill in that missing chunk in Bond's career ... as I recall, he's all better by Colonel Sun
also the plot in many ways foreshadows contemporary issues, with Cold War meddling in the Middle East (specifically the installation of the Shah of Iran) ... I thought it was a good trick, placing this adventure right after Fleming's last yet dealing with the roots of today's conflicts, in theory. As I say, I don't think it really all added up by the end, and it felt more like the story was only half way done when it just sort of stopped.
speaking of which, much of the last half reads like a road trip, which does not make for an exciting Bond adventure, but I do like reading those kinds of stories (crossing a foreign landscape and dealing with mundane problems like finding food and changing money), John Buchan was really good at that sort of thing ... so the writer loses track of his Fleming pastiche near the end, but turns out he's good at this sort of travel writing.
theres a big reveal as to the identity of a fellow 00 agent ... I shouldn't spoil that, but I gotta say I spotted 004 as soon as the character was introduced, which is many pages before M reveals there is a new 00 agent ...
