I love Craig as Bond, but I find Skyfall to be incredibly overrated and am wary of Mendes's return.
I think the first half of Skyfall is excellent, but the pretentious ending and the huge, huge plotholes that emerge in the third act sort of ruin the film for me.
These plotholes have been discussed elsewhere, so I won't rehearse them. All I can say is that they do not bode well for the future. I suspect that the praise that has been lavished on Skyfall will encourage the filmmakers to give us more of the same... Especially since the mistakes of Skyfall strike me as being the result not of incompetence, but of a misguided (and rather clumsy) attempt to make a Bond film to end all Bond films.
I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong as I always go to watch a new Bond film hoping it will be great.
Think the issue will be really which direction the franchise will take on Bond 25. Skyfall shows a quite mature 007 and Bond 24 obviously cannot go backwards on that. But you have already now a new "M" as well as "Q" and even Moneypenny so how to re-boot it again as they did - in a quite smart manner according to me - with Goldeneye ?
Have them in for just a couple of movies only and then come up with other "M" and "Q" (that I do personally hope they will) and so on ...?
After Casino Royale, either you just forget about any logical timeline or it gets complicated.
One think is to find a "creative" way to bring back the old DB5 if they will want to one day - another one is to put the pieces of that puzzle together.

Ralph Fiennes ‘excited’ about playing M in the next James Bond film.
As am I! I love Ralph Fiennes's portrayal of M in Skyfall. A throwback to Bernard Lee, but with Fiennes own twist on it.
Personally, I hope he stays with the role for a while. Obviously there are a lot of variables here, but at age 50, if he were to play the role til age 65 that would allow him to remain M for a solid 5-7 more films.
He is quite an accomplished actor so I'm sure there are other realms of film he would like to pursue, but the role of M doesn't necessarily have to be too involved. I can't imagine 10 minutes of screentime would put too much of a hitch in his filming schedule. Hopefully he will be involved more heavily in certain films, but perhaps not as much as Dench was during her tenure.
It's not unthinkable if he plays M until he's 75, for that matter. If that happens he will be M for more than one Bond, but that isn't a problem. That said, we haven't seen him as M fro more than a minute or so.
Def one of the main highlights if Skyfall. He is a great actor and will be a great M. As much as I live Judy I think the role needed changing to shake things up a little!!
Hope they keep him in the finale office also and not back to the over the top tech style as seen in previous films (especially QoS)

I just finished reading it and absolutely loved it, the best baddy/henchmen since Goldfiger!
I doubt that Bond 24 will be based on Devil May Care, although I too loved that novel.
My feeling is that EON own the rights to the Ian Fleming novels, not the continuation ones. Therefore Bond 24 is likely to be a wholly original screenplay and not based on any of the continuation novels. Shame though because I often thought that some of the John Gardner and Raymond Benson novels were top notch.
I too loved DMC, but it would be very difficult to set the story in the present day and there's no chance of EON setting it in the 1960s so I think it's a complete non-starter.
It is not confirmed by Eon that they will ever film DMC or any of the non-Fleming novels. And yes, they do have the rights.

"Role of Honour" for instance has a climax on an airship a year before AVTAK had the same, and the fight between Bond and Caber in "Licence Renewed" is very similar to that between Bond and Necros in TLD in its setting.

Then I suggest you swerve this one and wait until after the next as well....Craig's films have been some of the best of the whole franchise....that coupled with MASSIVE box-office success means they won't veer too far from what's gone...good -{

My criticism of Skyfall isn't as sharp as yours, but I do hope that the next one is better. Casino Royale is still the better and more watchable of Craig's films for me.

I agree that Casino Royale is the best of the Craig films so far, and although I'd like the next one to be at least as good as that (a tall order), I'll be satisfied if it's as good as Skyfall.
I too believe that Casino Royale is the best of Craig's Bond films. I actually thought it was better before you guys had that is Mathis a traitor topic. And before seeing the following movies. The wait for the sequel to Casino Royale was probably the most excited I've ever been for a Bond film. Except maybe for when I was getting them on VHS from the video store when I was younger. But that was a different feeling. One of excitement at what new world was going to be shown based only on the VHS box artwork and the girl who kept giving me two or three Bond movies at a time. I think three or six movies was the maximum rental amount back in those days. I still can't believe it was a video store girl that introduced me to Bond movies.
I don't know why people gravitate towards certain Bond actors. I think The Mantis said in one of his videos something about your age and the Bond you see on screen or TV. And whether or not that is your Father's Bond or something. My experience is probably different because of how I was introduced to Bond films. I think the first Bond movie I saw in a proper theater was either A View to a Kill or Licence to Kill. Starting off with a Bond actor's ending movie probably isn't the best. But that's probably why I'm not against those two movies as most people. I remember seeing Never Say Never Again on VHS (maybe LaserDisc I can't remember it clearly) on a new 27" Sony TV and thinking it doesn't get better than this. But I do remember ditching work and seeing Goldeneye's first showing which was mid day. I was excited about that one even though I watched the trailer a bunch of times. I think I even read the book too. I had a hot dog (I don't mess with these anymore) and nachos. The girl who was working at the theater's food stand watched some of the movie with me and gave me her number. She wasn't my type though.
I guess I want to relive that early Bond experience. That's why I always mention those early posters, the type of movie, the travel log feel I think it's called which is similar to the books in many ways. Casino Royale is the closest to that. But it's still very far away. And with Mendes, I assume being proud of Skyfall, the only hope I have is that since the next one won't be an anniversary movie and because the classic pieces (M, Q, Moneypenny, classic office, etc.) are in position. Maybe we'll get something special this time around.
