-{ Welcome to the world of the Literary Bond. :D

FRWL is a good choice one of Fleming's best. I also think for a good read
Dr No, Moonraker and O.H.M.S.S are great.
Why did you decide to start with FRWL ?, you know ther'll be many telling you
you should've started with CR and worked your way through. :007)

I didn't read them in order Picked them up as a kid from 2nd hand Book shops
and markets to just read them as I got them.
    Either way they're fun. -{

After getting all the Bonds on to a cheap Tablet, I now hope to get all the Bond novels
on Kindel so I'll hve everyhing Bond on it. Although that's a long term Plan. :D

FRWL was the first one I read as my selection was based on my ranking of Bond movies. Don't know if it was just me, but getting into it was slow-going because of the plot and time-line structure and maybe because of being used to the movies and being a teen then, the need for instant gratification for exciting Bond action worked against that appreciation. Now, of course, I'd gladly pick it up and read with abandon.

How similar is FRWL to the movie? I'm almost finished DAF and I'm surprised how the novels aren't anything close to the movies. I still really like them though.

FRWL is closer than most, perhaps the closest, aside from OHMSS perhaps. But the novel is a lot darker, more intense, it's more anti-Commie propoganda. And the action scenes at the end of the film don't feature in it. A lot of the film's dialogue is taken verbatim from the novel.

Most of the novels are used simply as a jumping off point for the movie, use the title, the names of the main characters, the locations and off you go.

Indeed. FRWL and OHMSS are the most faithful to Fleming. Thereafter (the 1970s) things took a decidedly different turn, to say the least.

Both FRWL and Dr. No are close to the films, mainly because Fleming was around during their development and shooting. I think FRWL is a great read. My first Bond book was Dr. No because I had just seen it at the movies and wanted to find out about this Fleming guy.
Enjoy the ride as you read each book. They all have that certain 'something' that Fleming breathed into the Bond character that no one (if you go by me) has been able to recreate. Forget the plots, the gags, the dated stereotypes --- look at how he describes Bond, his feelings, his intentions. Quite unique.
The scent smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling - a compost of greed and fear and nervous tension - becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.

IM upto chapter five so far, so I now understand Grant and his background, but in a way feel let down that
as a cinema Bond fan ive been some what cheated out of the true story and I have lots more to read
(what else is in store for me) But Flemings writing is fantastic ,the detail he has put in is so easy for the minds eye to conjour up images of what the master is trying to portray, I know film makers cannot use the whole book (shame)
to make a film ,the cost would be astronomical ,and I feel for the person whos job it is to translate the book to the film
which bit do you keep in/out that has to be a tough call, but tell me am I right to be worried that the book (after ive read it) could dare I say ruin the film ,will I be sitting there ,thinking oh I wish they had put that bit in,only you guys can tell me ,I await your advice :)

Glad your enjoying it AS. Fleming was a great writer he knew how to drive a story along. Making the film makers job a little easier. :))

While I was reading the Fleming Books Roger Moore was the screen Bond, and I
never had a problem seperating the two characters. The screen Bond and the literary Bond.
Both very diffferent But I loved them Both. :D

    Stick with the book, Always Shaken, it's fantastic. It's a slow start but you will see it all fits into the film after all... -{

I wonder if there would be any Interest in a Bond Book of the Month, I did suggest it before.
Where we'd pick a Book read it over a month, then Discuss the sh*t out of it. :)) . As we'd be
getting the modern take on them from Older readers and members who'd never read them before.

I'd be up for that. I've read all the Fleming novels and Col Sun many times, the Gardner books, Deaver and Faulks once, and none of the Benon ones.so we have plenty to choose from!

Pour yourself a glass of something and listen to the John Barry soundtrack while reading it. I felt the film was a tad lightweight having read the book first, but the film is a crowdpleaser while the book is a bit of a solo pleasure, a bit nasty in its tone too.

I'd be up for that too. Just started re-reading them in order, about 3/4 of the way through Live and Let Die now.

That being said, I've only read Fleming, and only intend to read Fleming. So if a non-Fleming Bond novel is the "Bond Book of the Month", I won't be able to contribute.

Could I ask DEFIANT 74205, why you haven't read any of the continuing novels ?
and do you include Col Sun. I'm just interested because when I was younger I was always
so excited to read a new Bond adventure even By Gardner ( some of which I think are very good )
I've also read the Benson novels but these are of a much lower quality ( Just my opinion ).
Infact I can't wait for "Solo" to come out, To get in to another Bond adventure. :))

I haven't got all the continuation novels, so I wouldn't be able to discuss all books, but I would definitely join in the conversation about the novels I have read.

Well would anyone object to waiting to the end of to the end of this month and start in July.
I'd suggest starting with Casino Royale, as if someone doesn't have a copy there should be loads
    in old book shops etc.
All opinions welcome along with any better suggestions, everthings up for discussion at the moment.
