To be honest ( although they have every right not to read them) I do
Think any Bond fan is missing out by not reading them, at least a few
If only to get a feel for the time period Bond existed in. :D

Just start it on an evening where you don't have to be up early the day; you'll read it all in one sitting.

I will have a quick flick through it ,bath/lav ect :)) to see what food/drink is going on .Then I will plan a serious take it all in read with those relevant foods ect handy ,just to get those extra dimensional pleasures .Its almost like those Disney multi
sensory film shows ,in the states (Welshboy knows :) ) where you experience sight, sound, smell, taste ,even pain ,it just brings the book a bit more together for me .Its as if Flemming was drinking /smoking /eating whilst typing his works ,I cant realy explain it in type .I think our resident literary expert Silhouette man might dig where im coming from :)

Im painfully slow getting thru these books, simply because I'm not a big book reader. Once I get cracking on a book, I hammer thru it but its getting actually started thats the prob.

Not sure if its a good idea or not but I started on TSWLM and ended up skipping it after a few pages to OHMSS instead which I've only read a few pages so far due to time and circumstances.

I find I like to read when I'm in the house alone or when everybody is asleep - both rare with kids :)

I need them to explain to me what all those filthy words mean ! ;)
I had a very sheltered upbringing, .... Coal shelters, bus shelters,
    Air raid shelters ... :))

( there is no joke so old I won't tell it :)) )

The Man With The Golden Gun

    I always get a Craving to read this Novel. It's Flemings most unappreciated Work and in my Opinion, one of his best -{

Very atmospheric -{ love how Fleming set up
The first meeting between 007 and Scaramanga ! {[]
Makes you wonder how it would have turned out if he
Had have been able to do a final draft. :)

It gets a bad press, but there are a few rewards in reading it. The main problem is Bond himself, who's much more thinly sketched than usual.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
Also Scaramanga is a real mean thug in the book as opposed
To the suave, educated Sir Christopher Lee portrayal. More in
    Keeping with Franz Sanchez.

Very true- Sanchez is partly inspired by the novel version of Scaramanga (and Davi would have been good casting in a faithful film version).

Sadly, I think Fleming was feeling rather thinly sketched himself at that point. :#

    Devil May Care :

Sold with the tag line "Sebastian Faulks writing as Ian Fleming", which in my Opinion he does a very good job,
Very close to Fleming's style. He also ticks all the Boxes with a great Villain Dr Julius Gorner, who has a nasty
side kick , and a plan to destroy Britain. He throws in a Tennis match which Bond manages to win even though
    Gorner is cheating.
To me Gorner is a cross between Dr No and Goldfinger, very evil and willing to use people as disposable items.
The only point that I wouldn't be a big fan of, is in his Having Bond escape out of Russia, this is the only point
I feel he strays from the "Fleming Formula" before giving us the expected ( in a good way) final scene with
    Bond v Villain.
I enjoyed it a lot and think it is a fine continuing Novel.
For November ( Keeping to Bond's timeline) I'll be re-reading SOLO, which, I'm not looking forward to as I
didn't really like it first time round, although Tastes do change, so you never know. :))

I'd forgotten how good it was, I forgot to add with Gorner's hatred
Of Britain, he has a little of Sir Hugo mixed in there as well. -{ But
None the less a great villain .

DMC is a very poor attempt from Faulks (rumour has it the IFP girls left him to it, were appalled at what he handed in, but had no choice other than to smile and publish)

Yet, certainly CARTE BLANCHE and now SOLO make it seem far better than it did in 2008 (when BY ROYAL COMMAND was the best JB Novel in Fleming's cententary).

Lousy plot, though. And JB doesn't really mind Russia now he's FINALLY been there??? Wot, Bassie, all that IF swatting missed the ref in MOONRAKER and what the commie fuckers did to in him TMWTGG????)

JB playing tennis???? Some modern day HR politics. A girl who's effetely useless (if you can't tell there's only one I refuse to apologise)

And Faulks "writing as Ian Fleming"????? Nah, like Gary Fleming, the plumber who like lives down our street.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
:)) Some nice points as always, many I'd forgotten about. :D
Although I still rate it higher than CB and Solo.

In a passing a car wreck kid of way. Found myself warming to it after CB ad SOLO by comparison.

But really? Seb Faulks wrote THIS? AND claims to be an IF fan? :s

    I'm a fan and I couldn't write like Fleming.
So far, only Amis & Wood have done a good job at that. I guess my expectations are low now...

Agree on Amis and Wood. Thought Pearson cracked it, too.

Faulks, of course, shouldn't have sold it "writing as IF". But more meant his research ad knowledge of JB, which for "a fan" was pretty bad.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
    Yes, I agree Wood did a great job as did Amis -{
I did say in my post about DMC, I too didn't care for the
Bit about Bond's escape from Russia, IMNO, after the
Plane crash, Fleming would have cut to the ending in
    Paris. Although I still enjoyed it. -{
