The Egyptian military has deposed a democratically elected government and seized power, imprisoning the president. We aren't going to call this a "coup" though, apparently, because this would cause the USA to cease funding that military (which it has done as a reward for them promising to stop using it against Israel in one of the stupidest examples of a treaty I have ever heard), and for some reason this would be a bad thing... Meanwhile the top story on UK news is that Madeline McCann (who went missing a few years ago) is still missing.

How do you stay positive AJB?

Sometimes I wonder especially when I heard today, that Jon Venables One of the
Killers of James Bulger is to be released even after he's already been caught with
abusive/torture child porn. It seems everone has Rights except the Victim and their
    Families.

The only way I stay positive is to shut off the news. I'll watch my Giants play (even though it is kind of depressing to watch right now). During football season I'll watch my 49ers. When no sports is available to watch and I find myself in a funk, I turn to music. I'll put on a live show I have on CD and just rock out. That usually puts me in a good mood.

The reason the US and the West doesn't really mind this coup, is the fact that the toppled government is a Muslim Brotherhood government. In other words they are muslim fundamentalists. It was a democratically elected government, so we couldn't really oppose them. But we don't really mind that they are gone.

Although Morsi was democratically elected, he was no longer a democratic leader. He had taken control of the judiciary and his constitution went against secular Egyptians, Coptic Christians, moderate Muslims and women and catered only for his own conservative supporters. He had eliminated all checks and balances and was fast implementing a totalitarian state - the exact same state that the revolution had overthrown originally. Consequently, he had made himself untouchable and unimpeachable and therefore although the military overthrew a democratically-elected government they did not overthrow a democracy.

Anyone remember that GE-style ad a few years back in which the revolutionaries storm the palace, then the leader espies a bottle of fine vodka formerly owned by deposed despot? Next scene, he's as bad as said despot, while another group wait to depose him, led by a man who values fine liquer himself...

President Morsi did place too much power into his own and his party's hands. I wonder if democracy ever will take hold in Egypt.

What do you people think of mr Snowden, his leaks and flight?

My take is this: there is of course a need for listening in on the enemy, both foreign and domestic. But if unchecked it is a grave danger to freedom and democracy. I think mr Snowden was right in revealing those accesses to the public. But he made some misstakes. He should have focused on domestic surveillance. He should have tried to make sure to the best of his abilities not to reveal anything that would endanger America and Americans. He should have fled to a country where he would probably safe at once, Uruguay or Iceland would have been his best chances. He should not have fled to China and Russia, America's main strategic adversaries in the world today. What is your take?

I really don't think that's the case! I mean they might have been a bit more conservative than your average Joe but so is Bill O'Reilly and you wouldn't call him... well actually maybe you're right.

This is precisely what I have done recently. Its sort of like putting fingers in your ears and going 'la la la la la ' ... I used to listen to talk radio all day, discussing events, but all it did was depress me or make me angry. It was then I made a conscious decision to turn it all off.

Oh my, whenever I catch any of "Any Questions" or "Any Answers" on Radio 4 (especially the last one) it makes my blood boil!

Ah well, there was a good tennis match on the telly this afternoon, you may have heard something about it, that helped cheer me up.

I agree Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood are moderate compared to most muslim fundamentalists. They are more simmular to the fundamentalist government in Turkey than the Taliban or Iran.

I don't like the attitude that the news are so negative I'll stop watcing the news. A lot of people nowadays, and perhaps especially In the US o_O, are dangerously ignorant about the world. Bush could never have invaded Iraq (the worst strategic blunder for decades) if the Americans were more concious of the news and the world at large. I'm sorry Americans. I admire your country in many ways and many of the Americans here seems very well informed.

Don't be so sure, thousands of Britons took part in demonstrations in the streets of London opposing the Iraq war, but it didn't change anything. If a politician wants to do something then generally they'll do it!

Thousands attended the lying in state of the Queen Mother, queueing for up to 11 hours a day. It's just a chance to get out the house, bring a picnic.
