I have been advised by a fellow agent to read DR NO as he says I will find out why Bond
is issued a PPK,my theory would be that after ww2 all the confiscated weapons held by us British,
the PPK would be the best choice over the P38 the PO8 parabellum (Luger) and various Mausers
after all 10,000 Gestapo officers couldn't have been wrong ? can any of our resident weapons experts
enlighten me

I wouldn't look too deep into it. It was picked because Fleming liked the sound of the name. Boothroyd did send him a .22 to shoot as well, so the looks may have been the pivoting factor, but it was the name that had him intrigued at first.

As to the real world use of the PPK in British military circles. The MOD procured thousands in the late sixties to late nineties for use within Special Forces (SAS, SBS), Royal Protection and other undercover roles such as 14 Company, now the SRS.

I can't believe that the Japanese Nambu was referenced in that passage, what a POS and the 8mm rounds would have been fun to find, though one did appear in a Connery movie, apart from ASP anyone know which one?

Yeah, the Nambu was in NSNA. He takes it off one of the guards and dumps it in an ice bucket. It's actually a rather rare version of the gun: it's nickel plated, which means it was either privately purchased by an officer (for quite a sum) or was a presentation gun awarded to one. I can only find one online for sale, which was priced at $500 and missing the magazine retaining spring AND fitted with clear plexiglass grips.

The PPK is actually a highly sensible choice for Bond, German or not. While it lacks power on paper, it can still perform admirably if you know what you're doing (and Bond certainly has downright improbable aiming skills). It's also extremely slim and small, which is perfect for a spy (unlike the P99), and can readily take a suppressor.
