Well, it was the first i watched. So it still holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart!
In my imagination, Bond ends up with Lin on a beach in retirement. :x
Oh really? Wai-Lin and Bond have zero chemistry. They end up in the end just for one reason, and one reason only and that is for the sake of it.
I'd rather think that Brosnans Bond didn't get a relationship with no-one of his leading ladies except Natalya.
One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
But they do not share one single moment that could possibly indicate that they would make love in the end before that actually happens. I can't make my mind up what they see in eachother. ?:)

See the underwater scene near the end. -{
Bond saves Wai Lin during that scene, it's the music in that particular scene that creates some kind of love that doesen't really exists.

I now find myself enjoying YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE again. I went off it for several years but now have to acknowledge its epic influence. As long as one takes it in the good spirit intended, it's marvellous entertainment. After all, without it there would probably have been no SPY WHO LOVED ME, at least not in the form we know & love! But I still feel it's Connery's weakest 007 performance.

You are right on the button, BIG TAM. YOLT is a criminally underrated entry. Sure, the film has its flaws and Connery is just not up to the magnificent par he had set. All this is true.
But...what a ride! Quibble all you want about about logic, YOLT is an exercise of fun and entertainment. Not just "marvellously entertaining" but a reminder of a time where Bond was on a mission that had NOTHING to do with personal matters.
I first saw it when I was 10 and was overwhelmed by its audacity. Bond in Japan is already exciting but Bond in a Ken Adam version of Japan is pop culture legend.
YOLT has plotholes you can drive a DB5 thru but I can overlook all that when the film moves along with such breathless assurance. Its the first proper roller-coaster ride of the series and should be accepted as such.
Highly influential (The Incredibles, anyone?) this is a Bond adventure that has no agenda other than being a cracking good time on a Saturday afternoon.
I like my Bond to be tough and gritty. BUT I want to be transported to a Bond reality thats larger than life.
In theory, I want to see a Dalton 007 in a Ken Adam universe.
YOLT rocks in a way that series has forgotten about. A hollowed out volcano makes no sense logically. But it makes glorious sense if you accept that Bond has always had one foot dipped in fantasy.
Style and showmanship. Thats what we need more of in the future.

not all of them I'm afraid...YOLT, the DAD of it's day ? A strong first half that wains and ultimately collapses under its own weight ?
wains and ultimately collapses under its own weight ?
Are you kidding? Connery leading a band of ninjas on a epic battle with Blofeld's baddies inside a hollowed out volcano? What's not to like? (I know, I know - it's way over the top. But still! )

There are some elements and scenes that I love, the opening, the fight in the office, the relationship with Tiger, and of course the bath house, superb score and sumptuous locations, Ninja training scene started my journey into martial arts etc. However...the cringe worthy Japanese makeover and a creeping corniness plus (and I know that you won't like this or agree) a jaded and Proto paunchy Sean count against it for me. As a spectacle however it's hard to beat. It's a guilty pleasure for me. in fact I'm feeling more warmly towards it while typing, better stop now before I agree with you. :007)
