Irritating Mr Moore

Having just viewed LALD, Moonraker and TMWTGG I have just realised what bugs me about Roger Moore, it's the way he say's "Darling", and the fact that he constantly say's it in that upper class condescending manner. He is probably the most affable actor to play the role but this is so irritating.

Yes, I've noted this on here before. I like Moore's performance as Bond, but he tend to come across as smarmy and slightly condescending when playing opposite his various love interests. He was much the same in The Saint, so it's clearly a characteristic of his acting style.

I'm sure the 'darling' was pure Rog and not scripted. He said it a lot in the Saint and Persuaders too.

Depends. The Connery aspect could take you, and the girl, with it. Moore seems more pleased with himself than anyone else would be, though it has a touch of the Rex Harrison about it.

Well Bond in the novels says it quite a lot and in a similar way too.

What bugs me is how almost every single line of his is a one-liner or a pun. How hard must it be to have a serious conversation with that man?!

Don't listen to the audio commentaries Magnusson! - Sir Roger drops them unexpectedly like smoke bombs. However as a serial punner myself, I know its like being a monk. - A force of habit. (Sorry!)

I think when Bond says it in the books, it's done with much more weight and sincerity. (Just finished DAF and had forgotten how good it is. Possibly one of the best of the books.) Also ... literary Bond was saying it in 1950s, by the 1970s with feminism in full stride, using a term like that outside of a relationship wouldn't ingratiate Bond to a strong-minded woman. Oh, that's right. The films started giving us weaker-minded little Barbie dolls, not tough cookies like Tiffany Case or Honey Chile Ryder.

Moore saying it makes me think like he's presuming there will be imminent sex, all that remains if for the girl to flutter her lashes, swoon into his arms, and coo, "Oh, Jaaaaames...." For a very short while (pre-teen to early teens) I thought that was plausible, but as I started dating girls, realized that women are far, far more sophisticated creatures for that cartoon nonsense to functional. Moore's term of endearment seems as anachronistic as those old "You've come a long way, baby" ads.

I support Moore!

I understand the complaints about Moore. Especially since we are in the age of a much more serious Bond and not only that, but in an era where people want more serious and darker movies in general.

But dammit as much as I love Craig and the new era; Moore's light-hearted, carefree, over-the-top fun makes me feel good inside every single time I watch him. If you've had a bad day and need some escapist fun, Moore is who I turn to every time

I agree too. If I have had a rotten day, a Sir Roger film cheers me up big time.
In fact, as much as I enjoy all the films, the Moore the better when I am down.
By contrast when I need motivation the Craig films offer royal solice from the skyfall, and the Sir Sean films as classics are the tip of the Goldfinger.

Ok I'll stop before I get a verbal kick in the Thunderballs.

But on an unpunny note, Sir Roger's Bond is the one I grew up with, and I am grateful for the fact he did bring some light fun to his take on the character. Made his serious moments (Scaramanga duel, bumping off Shandler, Stromberg, and Lokue) more prominant too.

There are only two instances where I find Rog to be irritating:

1. When JAWS is destroying their utility van and Anya is trying to drive off. Roger is being generally unhelpful and making a lot of bad jokes.

2. Interrupting Dr. Goodhead during the tour of Drax's space facility.

For the most part he's the coolest and best Bond. -{

I've always thought the scene in TMWTGG with Moneypenny was a sort of in joke with Moneypenny repeating Bond's "darling" in a teasing way

Sir Roger's portrayal of Bond who knows it all can be a bit irritating, but like Thunderbird 2, I agree that I can sit through Sir Rog's Bond films on Sky Movies 007 channel (even Moonraker) and enjoy it more than I can Connery's. He never fails to raise a laugh when he raises THAT eyebrow in my house!
