Dalton. Severely under rated.

I just recently finished watching the last of the bond films I hadn't seen yet, I finished with TLD and LTK, and I must say, Dalton is an absolutely outstanding Bond. He feels real and human unlike Moore, he brings the same kind of intensity that Craig brought, and he has the same level of charm that Brosnan had. In my opinion he has the perfect mix of Bond qualities, such a shame he didn't do more films.

    I absolutely share your view of Dalton, fellow fan (although Connery is my favorite). Welcome to the group.

    I don't think any Bond actor has been genuinely catastrophically awful, but I agree that he was somewhat overlooked, and I get annoyed by people claiming he nearly sunk the Bond franchise (when it was inevitably going to wind down a bit after many, many years and a lot of people involved with the inception of the movie franchise had either gotten old or died).

    You'll be glad to find a lot of fellow Dalton fans here, I haven't really seen much Dalton haters around in this place! :)

    Arguably, Dalton came the closest to Fleming's original Bond. It's weird how audiences didn't receive his performance that well during that time. His Bond was to 'dark' and 'realistic', while Craig gets all the praise for being exactly that! It is often said Dalton's Bond was ahead of it's time, and people simply weren't ready for it...
    Had he done more movies he would have possibly made it into higher ranking of the mainstream Bond fans as well. As Dalton is often only appreciated by the more 'diehard' Bond fans only...

    I wouldn't say he was my personal favorite Bond, but he's definitely up there! Although he does star in my personal favorite Bond movie: Licence to Kill!

    He gets quite a lot of stick for being a "serious" Bond but people often forget to take into account the scenes in TLD with Bond and Kara at the fair before Saunder's death. They are both laughing and having fun.

    There is also the scene in LTK after the Bimini bar fight on the boat and Bond scares Pam when he accidentally presses the horn, They both have a little laugh about it.

    I re-watched this recently, it's a bloody excellent bond film. Different, but it works so well.

    Dalton was also pretty good as that Mongo prince in Flash Gordon and the snide Not Errol Flynn in The Rocketeer.

    And in the past half decade or so he's had a fairly good career renaissance, turning up in interesting supporting roles in many films and TV shows (like Hot Fuzz, Chuck, and Doctor Who).

    just want to give a counter-opinion into all that Dalton-fanboy-cheering *
    I found him weak and weepy and he almost sank the EON tanker ;) {[]

    :D No that's not true - there are many factors for the franchise troubles but one of them was Dalton's bad acceptance with the audience.

    Dalton is neither 'weak' nor 'weepy'...he is a good actor whom projects a level of toughness and an authoritative manner that is crucial to playing Bond...both his films are solid entries into the Bond cannon...IMO, it was the release dates of the films that didn't help...hence the move to release the latter films towards the end of the year...

    Dalton is way overrated on this forum...he's loved about equally with craig and connery...he's underated by casual fans who might have seen just a few Bonds. Dalton is a good Bond just like Lazenby was...but just too dour in what are traditional Bond films with silly elements and lacking in the charisma dept. -{

    Laser in hubcaps, a vehicle doing a 90 degree turn in a pipeline, the tanker wheelie, the xray camera, the ice-cutting with the rim, the landing after parchuting with a Jeep off the plane - just for a starter :p

    I wouldn't class any of those as 'silly'....certainly not in the Roger Moore 'silly' class....so....what else you got ? B-)

    Hahhaha..I forgot about the X-ray laser camera that takes a skeletal Xray image from a picture off the wall. I love watching Living Daylights and Licence to kill on silent..then you can see the awesome overacting by Dalton..he seems like a deranged Joker like serial killer. :))

    aaaah, a new term to despise Dalton critics :D

    We are usually labelled "casual" Bond fans or audience when we don't enjoy Dalton's performance even - like in my case - we enjoy Craig's interpretation.

    "Casual audience" is something for the AJB glossary - Loeffs will like it

    Having just watched LTK for the umpteenth time, I can acknowledge that there are a few moments where the accusation of overacting may have some basis (I'm thinking of his expression when the swordfish bursts through his chair in the bar fight scene) BUT after years of Moore (not knocking Sir Rog, he's great) it's nothing.

    I'd attribute that more to his apparent discomfort with the comedic aspects of cinematic Bond than to overacting. He always seemed very solid to me in terms of performance, except for the lingering Moore-type material (which is sprinkled through his brief tenure like unpleasant droppings). When his Bond was required to deliver anything else, he brought it home.

    Gracias...I shall be a proud member.....although I enjoy Dalton in that Stephen Berkoff is outta control in Octopussy kinda way. But yeah he was a crybaby like Craig..and had a complete disregard for orders. Craig at least has a reason..His M was incompetent & Schizophrenic. -{ -{ -{
