Afflek as Batman

So, he's been cast as Batman in the 2015 Supes v Bats film alongside Cavill. Afflek's come a long way since DD, but is he Batman/Wayne?

The only positive thing I can cling to on this casting, is his height at 6ft 4ins (a good 3 inches taller than Cavill), and acting ability

It doesn't work for me...and I think this has 'car crash' written all over it !

I just don't understand this match-up at all...obviously I've never seen/read the graphic novels this will be based on....but it just seems stupid to me...

The story is fine. Superman is a boy scout and against vigilantes. Bats has to rely on his wits to get around Supes determination to bring him in whilst both are persuing a bigger and more imminent threat. I think Cavill makes a great Superman, although I didn't think MOS was worthy of him. It's Afflek's casting that is a a bit left field for me.

Affleck's casting is typical of how Warner Bros. goes about its business: safe if uninspired. Affleck is a pretty bankable commodity right now and physically fits the part. While he would not have been my first choice he is better than some of the other names that were floating around.

Based on Snyder' s comments it sounds like Batman will not be rebooted and instead played as an established seasoned crimefighter, which I think is a good thing.

Also I don't think this will end up as a Batman vs. Superman movie. It's common knowledge that WB wants to build up to a Justice League movie (Ala the Avengers) so while they may come to blows at some point I'm also certain the movie will end with them as reluctant partners as they prepare to face a larger threat together.

So Supes is a young boy....?....in the graphic novels ?

I just don't get what Batman brings to this..?...if he gets in Supes way he'd just sneeze and kill Batman...its obviously a successful graphic novel(s)...it just sounds stupid....guess I should read it before I call it 'stupid' though...

Boy Scout as in a high moralistic set of ideals that adhere strictly to the law. In Supes POV and when he first started out his opinion of Batman is of a vigilante who uses violence and intimidation and is therefore as much of a law breaker as the criminals he's beating.

Yeah, Supes could kick Bats butt quite easily in a fight. But Bats is sneaky and it's easy to manipulate someone who has the values of Superman. And he does it quite well in the graphic novels. Lex Luthor has no special powers, and he's been sorting Superman out for years.

This film will no doubt lead up to the Justice League film.

Superman may be stronger but Batman has always been smarter, exploiting his opponent's weaknesses (and even Superman has his weaknesses). That is how prior stories pitting the two often play out.

If you are curious try renting a copy of the animated movie Batman Superman: World's Finest which tells a very good story and nicely exploits both heroes' strengths and weaknesses.

Book Four of The Dark Knight Returns (and its animated adaptation) tells another good Batman Superman encounter.

Yeah, although on first look they don't seem to be a good match for a story. The two have them have had some pretty good ones that are right up there with the best and most successful.

Ok...thanks...it sort of clears things up a bit for me...

It will be interesting to see how this pans out...without Bale as Batman will we get Batman-lite with Affleck ?
I didn't bother with MOS as it got some terrible reviews - and some ok-ish reviews...so I've no idea how Cavill did....
I suppose this could all depend upon the quality of the script....

Cavill was really good. He was Superman and stood up well to Reeve's ongoing legacy. As long as he get's a decent script, he's perfect. Only time will tell with Afflek, I just can't see past Daredevil at the moment.

For me, Affleck is a star with this fringe in Argo, but with short hair looks a bit of a dunderhead. Superficial, but hey... He doesn't really look bad boy though.

That hit the nail on the head for me. He has a bit of a gormless look. Not in a horrible way, but too much so for square jawed grimacing needed for Batman.

The thing that surprises me about the Affleck casting is that he had stated on many occasions that he wanted to have nothing to do with the supehero genre as either director or actor. I'm sure that was partly due to the drubbing Daredevil got after being released in the midst of the whole Jennifer Lopez affair but it does make me wonder what changed his mind, other than the pile of money WB probably threw his way.

To get away from the personal squabbling, I was rather intrigued by the idea that Batman in this film was going to be an "older" character. Granted, Affleck is no kid, but I don't know that he could pass as an "elder statesman" type. Oh, well, I tend to be a sucker for these kinds of movies, so I'll probably see it. Now back to the put-downs. . .

I'm somewhat reminded of the outrage when Formerly Poor Danny^TM was cast as James Bond...albeit in that case the objections were more physical than anything else---and the gripe with Affleck has more to do with damning his acting ability, or bowing to the bandwagon/lemming mentality of simply bashing the poor fellow, since he's essentially physically perfect for the part. Personally, I think his portrayal of George Reeves in "Hollywoodland" was excellent...and he's come a long way since "Daredevil." "The Town" and "Argo" both show his chops, IMO.

I would expect them to toss in a few grey hairs...and his Bruce Wayne will look convincingly older than the ten-years-younger Cavill.

Probably not surprising to those here who know me...but I'm not going to condemn the film nearly two years before its release

Affleck is a so-so actor but a fine director. I can't fathom why he would want to work with a hack like Snyder. I agree with this comment from Frank Conniff aka TV's Frank from MST3K: "When Ben Affleck plays Batman, it'll seem strange and different having a talented filmmaker on a Zack Snyder set."

Career resurgence- he's had his fall from grace ("Gigli"), has regained cred (as a director, anyway), and now is looking for a box-office smash (which this seems certain to be). A bit like Robert Downey, Jr.
