How old is he meant to be in this film? A tad more of a physical contrast with Cavill might have been good.
The scuttlebutt is that Wayne/Batman is supposed to be a good 10 years older than Kent/Superman.
In Snyder's universe, Batman will be an established presence (no more unnecessary reboots) and the age difference and existing history leads me to suspect the the film will be in large part about Batman teaching the more naive Superman that there's a lot more to crimefighting that he thinks. That's a common motif in lots of Batman/Superman stories and I would not be at all surprised to see two comics fans like Snyder and David Goyer explore that angle. It would also be a natural lead-in into the inevitable Justice League movie. In most Justice League stories, its Superman who takes the lead so I could see this one being used to introduce us to a new Batman while also seasoning Superman to be the logical leader.
I read an interesting theory on another message board. WB Hired Affleck as Batman in hopes they could talk him into directing the Justice League film.
Affleck was rumored to be in consideration for directing a Justice League movie last year as well when it was still not clear what direction WB wanted to take with its superhero franchises.
With the departure of Legendary Pictures (which helped finance and produce the Nolan batfilms), the probable departure of Nolan (he is closely tied to Legendary and busy with Interstellar) and Bale's refusal to play Batman without Nolan's participation/blessing, Affleck was a logical, safe choice with quite a few upsides. He has a history with WB; Argo and The Town were both well regarded WB films that garnered Affleck and the studio a lot of prestige. He can function as both a leading man and A-list director for future films. Unlike Bale's one note moody Batman and utterly humorless, non-entity portrayal of Wayne, Affleck can bring an element of wit and even a darker humor that the Nolan films completely lacked. He also has the requisite square jaw that any would be Batman needs.
Some of the other rumored candidates were interesting but all had their potential gotchas. Ryan Gosling has been in several bombs and has been quickly falling out of favor (kind of like Affleck 10 years ago); Josh Brolin was too old; Joe Manganiello was too young; Matthew Goode (who would have been a really interesting option in my opinion) was too much of an unknown and thus too risky.
There are rumors that WB is scouting locations in Detroit; this would suggest that we'll be going back to a dingier, dirtier, more down-trodden Gotham City. Nolan's slick, clean Chicago meets New York meets LA version of Gotham was clean and pretty and absolutely nothing like the comics.
I'll definitely give this a chance; I know I can at least count on Snyder to give me a movie that will be recognizably similar to the comics and that is something I rarely got from Nolan, especially in the bloated, horribly overrated Dark Knight Rises.
I'm an optimist so i will consider him great upon proven otherwise. I like Ben Affleck, i think he is an extraordinary actor who has grown a lot the last years (The Town, Argo etc) so i think he will pull it off.
One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Bill Schultz on the talk show Red Eye had a pretty good observation last night (this is a rough quotation): "Remember the original Batman, Michael Keaton? Everyone was screaming, 'Mr. Mom? He sucks!' Then when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker: 'Brokeback Mountain? He sucks!' So history might prove Affleck will be great."

And you can also add the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man to that list. In fact, I seem to recall a pretty negative post from a familiar mod when the announcement was first made....
Robert Freakin' Downey Jr.?!? He's a superb actor, but as Tony Stark?! I guess they're really going to emphasize Stark's heart condition, because otherwise I can't imagine why they'd cast a short-ish, haggard-looking guy who's over 40!
Touché, Tony. I don't even remember writing that, but I'm happy to admit I was wrong--Downey truly made the character his own, and I think his humor made The Avengers hold together. I will also admit to being wrong about Daniel Craig's casting as James Bond--I thought at first he'd be a disaster, but I now love his interpretation of the character. With age comes wisdom, I guess.
I have got so many casting calls wrong over the years I'm not even going to try and guess how Affleck is going to do. One thing I will say about him though is Affleck either gets it very right or very wrong!! Time will tell.
I quite like the sound of this. Cavill I like and if Bryan Cranston is Lex Luther I'll be happy.
Just to add to the joy of this film ... The twitter world is strongly suggesting that Snyder wants Timothy Dalton for Alfred .... Rumour or true ??

Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope
I do think Affleck has grown as an actor, and having a few set backs in his career
until his recent success as a director, so who knows he might turn out to be very
good.
"I've been informed that there ARE a couple of QAnon supporters who are fairly regular posters in AJB."
He may not be everybody's cup of tea but Ben Affleck is here to stay as the all-new Batman… and it looks as though he's a bit of a fan himself after building his very own secret Batcave entrance.
After the controversial decision to cast Ben Affleck in the role of Batman, DC fans have been up in arms. And after the abysmal 'Daredevil' movie you can hardly blame them. But it looks as though there might be a light at the end of the Bat-tunnel as it turns out that Affleck himself is a huge Batman fan.
Then again wasn't he a big fan of Dare Devil.

I was on the fence about Affleck as Batman, but Mr. Martini's post made me laugh so hard that it is now impossible for me to hold any ill-will towards Ben.
I'm somewhat reminded of the outrage when Formerly Poor DannyTM was cast as James Bond...albeit in that case the objections were more physical than anything else---and the gripe with Affleck has more to do with damning his acting ability, or bowing to the bandwagon/lemming mentality of simply bashing the poor fellow, since he's essentially physically perfect for the part. Personally, I think his portrayal of George Reeves in "Hollywoodland" was excellent...and he's come a long way since "Daredevil." "The Town" and "Argo" both show his chops, IMO.
I would expect them to toss in a few grey hairs...and his Bruce Wayne will look convincingly older than the ten-years-younger Cavill.
Probably not surprising to those here who know me...but I'm not going to condemn the film nearly two years before its release
