edited August 2013 in The James Bond Films
Without getting into details and qualifications, I was wondering if we could do this simple title list.
1- The Bond movies you watch quite frequently.
2- The Bond movies you see infrequently, but you DO see them.
3- The ones you avoid seeing if you can help it.

1-
DN
TB
YOLT
LALD
TMWTGG
OP
TLD
LTK
GE
TND
QOS

2-
FRWL
GF
OHMSS
DAF
TSWLM
FYEO
TWINE
DAD
CR
SF

3-
NSNA
MR
AVTAK

Anyone else?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

There are films I've watched tons and tons of times trying to get something out of them and have either succeeded (in the case of TLD, especially) or failed (in the case of QOS and AVTAK). Should we carve out an exception for that, or perhaps change it to "The films you watch frequently for the sake of enjoyment", "Films you watch for the sake of enjoyment not very often, but do so", and "Films you may watch a lot, but not for the sake of enjoyment"? Maybe asking for a change in the question is too much, but perhaps stating whether you've watched a particular film for the sake of enjoyment vs. dissection might be a better question. In any case, I'll treat my list as "for the sake of enjoyment"...alternately, if you've been around, you've obviously seen a lot more of Connery and Moore's films than Dalton, Brosnan, or Craig's. I've thus excluded SF from the list simply because I've not gotten enough chances to watch it.

    Tier 1...
    -FRWL
    -GF
    -DN
    -OHMSS
    -TB
    -GE
    -TSWLM
    -CR
    -OP
    -YOLT
    -TLD
    -LTK
    -DAF
    -LALD

    Tier 2
    -TMWTGG (barely misses Tier 1)
    -FYEO
    -TND
    -TWINE
-AVTAK (For all I've bashed it)
-QOS (Also for all I've bashed it)

Tier 3 (Note that there are VERY few films I outright try and avoid)
    -MR
    -DAD
-NSNA (Just rewatched it. I liked Bernie Casey as Felix Leiter and thought Fatima Blush was a pretty good character...but it was almost as if someone stuck a bunch of Bond characters in a non-Bond universe. I can't explain it any better than that.)
-The original CR that had Barry Nelson playing "Jimmy Bond"
-CR '67 (Unwatchable to me. Literally the only Bond film I've tried to make it through and have failed).
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

Perhaps you're right. I'm not that big a fan of LALD, but I wouldn't say I actively avoid it. Let's move that one to Tier 2. See, I'm not an inflexible old curmudgeon after all! :))

I should have clarified, then, at least on the bit you quoted me on. I also meant "these days" regarding enjoyment vs. understanding and not a cumulative score. You can watch films over and over again for understanding, time not withstanding. With that said, it's almost impossible to avoid a cumulative score with SF since it's only been out a short time.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

Well, I suppose, but I've ascertained that while I enjoy SF, it's definitely 2nd tier material for me. Not a movie I will watch more than once a year.

::Shrugs:: I suppose, but then, most of our lists are probably pretty flexible if a new point about a film is raised or something in said film is given new meaning, new context, or even changed (and with SF, I see this as an actual possibility). For example, what if all that cut content that supposedly made Severine into an exponentially less-sympathetic character gets restored at one point (since I know that scene drags down much of the film for you; you did state it)? Again, I find it difficult to avoid the cumulative/time effect.

That makes it more acceptable, not necessarily exponentially better. I still have major issues with the score & Craig's haircut. 8-)

Great idea. I will watch any of the films, but I never choose the films in tier three unless I am watching a series (All films, all Moore films etc.). Skyfall is still pretty new but I love it and it gets chosen frequently...

    Tier One :
    Dr. No
    From Russia With Love
    The Spy Who Loved Me
    Diamonds Are Forever
    Skyfall
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Quantum of Solace
    For Your Eyes Only

    Tier Two:
    Goldfinger
    Live and Let Die
    You Only Live Twice
    Casino Royale
The Man With the Golden Gun
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Octopussy
    The Living Daylights
    Goldeneye
    The World is Not Enough

    Tier Three:
    License to Kill
    A View to a Kill
    Thunderball
    Die Another Day
    Moonraker

Tier Four: I refuse to acknowledge this film as a bond film and haven't watched it in 25 years:
    NSNA

That's why I like this thread. I wouldn't put all of my tier 1 films in a list of "the best" or even necessarily my favorite but these are the ones I watch more than others. I agree CR is a better film than QoS, but I find I watch QoS more often.

Skyfall is the best bond since FYEO IMHO. I really like that film.

    -The World is Not Enough
    -The Living Daylights

List 1, All the Bond Films -{ ( Watch them all, all the time )

    List 2, .........................

List 3, CR(67) and NSNA. CR (67) is very, very Bad and very 60's humor
NSNA, is so Boring. Nothing much happens.
    ( althought I love E Fox as M, and B Casey as Leiter )

Unlike some, I have very fond memories of Moonraker so Yes I do watch it several times ( even more) a year. I also watch DAD ( first half is great) many times a year, I even watch TMWTGG and QOS over and over even though I think
they are pretty weak films. But I love them all. :))
