  Connery nailed hen he said the key to playing Bond is to make it look as easy and cool as possible, and still maintain the danger. To me he does that better than any of the other Bond actors, and that's why he remains my favorite.

  I agree. Connery balanced the wit & danger brilliantly, but he was aided in this by a group of film-makers who approached the material in the same way. Once the Bonds had become defined as their own sub-genre (certainly by 1971) it appeared to influence everyone involved with a self-referencing knowing approach which made it difficult to maintain that balance. Perhaps it was inevitable that a feeling of self-parody was allowed to dominate things for a time.
