I agree. Connery balanced the wit & danger brilliantly, but he was aided in this by a group of film-makers who approached the material in the same way. Once the Bonds had become defined as their own sub-genre (certainly by 1971) it appeared to influence everyone involved with a self-referencing knowing approach which made it difficult to maintain that balance. Perhaps it was inevitable that a feeling of self-parody was allowed to dominate things for a time.
