The Beauty of a 23-film Series

James Bond stood the test of time and continues to do so today. Here's why all of the 23 films are important to me as a viewer.

In my eyes, any other film franchise could not hold up as much as Bond has. 23 films provides quite the variety in any franchise, separating James Bond from Star Wars or Lord of the Rings (Don't get me wrong, these are legendary franchises!).

My top 23 Bond list changes every time I watch a Bond film. To give an example, YOLT used to be #17 on my first ranking I made for myself. I watched it again a few months later, and it jumped into my top 10. Seeing these over and over again, there a new things I notice each time. For example, I just recently noticed Goldfinger's slippers in Miami are a metallic gold color, glistening in the sun. That never caught my eye until now.

This is what happens to me whenever I watch a Bond film. People say I'm crazy for watching James Bond movies over and over again, but I never get bored with these films. That's the beauty of 23 films in this franchise. New things pop out at me that never did before and I appreciate the films so much more each time I watch them.

Never noticed it before but in GF during the scene in the stud farm, the gangster is riding the rocking horse facing arse end. Thought that was funny

That's it in a nutshell (cue Austin Powers jokes).
The James Bond series is unique- no other series of films (I dislike the term franchise) has been as long-lived, consistently successful, and inspired so many imitators.

23 movies and many more to come! Agree with the sentiments regarding finding new things you pick up with each viewing. The carnivale scenes in Moonraker are a feast for new pickups. Everytime I notice a costume I haven't noticed before. Still love the dalmation playing trumpet the best :))

And I use the term "franchise" lightly, referring to all the books, video games, tv shows (James Bond Jr) that have spun off of the film series. Maybe for the sake of this thread, we can now refer to it officially as a "series" :)

Guys, cos I don't like the term "franchise" doesn't mean you can't use it!! :))

Anyway, ZI is quite right! I've rambled on about this before, but Bond is in uncharted territory since nothing else has lasted this long. The closest thing I can think of (in film terms, some TV series have been really long) is the series of Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone, made in the 1930s and 40s. There were, I think, 14 of them and they were set in two different continuities.... which should sound familiar. However that's nothing compared to Bond's longevity.

I can tell you a TV show that comes to mind is Doctor Who. That seemed to have lested the test of time as well and it seems bigger now as it's ever been.

But that's such a good point you make. I think people should stop and realize how big of an accomplishment it really is for a film "series" ( ;) ) to last half a century. That requires incredible talent by everyone involved.

Although there is also the Japanese "Godzilla" series which I think is still on going. ;)

..though not made consistently by the same bunch of people (or their heirs and proteges) on a regular basis.

    I think you're forgetting "Son of Godzilla " :))
But Point taken to have a series made by the same "Family " over such a long time
is amazing and to think that there could be a further generation waiting in the wings.

I think the films are passed down from generation to generation. For example your grandparents would've seen it from the start in 1962 then shown the films to your parents which are then passed on to you. that is why the series has lasted so long because it is enjoyed by generations over.

That's what I've noticed! Especially with the DC era, I feel like Barbara and MGW are targeting a younger audience, while still grasping the traditionalists (given what they did/went back to in Skyfall). My buddies have caught on to Bond of the present era and I think this only means success for the franchise for years to come. A very smart move by the producers, in my opinion!

Must've skipped a generation with me though, my mam hates Bond films.

Never seen Skyfall yet so i can't comment on that. I also think MGW and Barbara are trying to cater for a different range of audiences. The women like looking at Bond himself (the scene with DC in his trunks in CR springs to mind) the men and teenage boys like the women and the kids like the stunts.
