YOLT fight scene

It seems that YOLT would make, nearly, everyone's top 5. This would be hard to argue & would certainly be in mine.

The thing is though, the roof top fight scene, the one when he runs across the roofs at the dock yard, well I hate this scene. I always have! It's the fact that Bond feebly kicks or punches several hardcore thugs, only for them to be immediately K.O.

I know thus is irrational but hey, what can I do?
Tell me, does the toppling of American missiles really compensate for having no hands?

For a single shot like that to have some simplified fight moves for the sake of re-shooting it doesn't bother me too much- it's expressionist! :))
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

I'm with chrisisall, it's art for art's sake- don't worry about the details too much and just enjoy!

    It's not often you see a fight scene shot from a distance with a telephoto lens. -{
as cinema is a Visual medium, It looks fantastic. :D

Agreed. It's one of the most beautifully shot scenes in the film. Never actually thought to think about the combat realism because I have escaped it completely in the awe of the spectacle I was watching.

Yeah, it's one of those scenes that you'd need to squint at while watching, along with the obvious composite effect boundaries and fake looking animation of the capsule scenes...then of course, because they're in the "Golden Age" canon, I for one am abundantly forgiving, more so than the CGI tsunami in DAD for example. Maybe they were thinking of the successful, large scale choreography of the underwater fight scenes in TB; the rooftop scene of YOLT, I think, was conceptually sound and they likely presumed that the choreography would realistically register on film at that distance.

    thirdyboy,

You must be joking. The rooftop fight scene is one of the most visually stunning and impressive sequences in the series.

I mean, of all the tiny nitpicky things to bother you, this should definitely not be among them.

Much of YOLT is shot as one big in-joke between the filmmakers and the audience. "We know there couldn't possibly be cameras filming the car pick-up and the space sequences, but there are the pictures on the little screens!" "Isn't it hilarious that Bond tries to pass himself off as Japanese by dressing like a local and feigning subservience?" "Of course Bond thought to bring suction cups even though he had no idea that the volcano had a metal roof!" The rooftop fight is in the same vein. "Trust us, he really does beat up twenty dockside thugs using nothing more than his fists and his fleetness afoot!" The scene is all about visuals, just like the whole film. And it works. All of it.
    Hilly...you old devil!

I do feel sorry for the poor little bloke who just seems to be approaching probably to ask directions to the nearest Harry's Bar - and Bond just shoots him!

I just love that scene. The music and the camera height. I really enjoy it.
Bond: "But who would want to kill me, sir?"
M: "Jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors . . . the list is endless."

Agree, iconic scene, and with the music...wow! That is Bond! However, the opening poster is right, that the thugs go K.O. very easily. But hey, who cares? YOLT was a bit of camp anyway. But camp at its highest most entertaining level. God, I love this movie!
