Hehe - yes he will be along in 5,4,3...

Yeah im kind of edging towards a 14060 - classic, clean symmetrical dial, Bond connection, still minters and NOS about if fussy on condition.

I saw a minter tritium version the other day but it was around a whopping 7.9K. The dude was selling as he picked up a NOS Sea-Dweller but in the end withdrew it and decided to keep both for the moment.

Ive not paid much attention to the older bracelets each time ive tried on a 5 digit - guess can't be that bad but just spoilt with the modern one. Guess thats the other things about the 5 digit Rolex - they look good on a nato. The modern ceramics simply look off on a Nato.

So, the decision is cleaner dial (because of no date) vs. matte dial and a much better proportioned case (slimmer lugs and the 14060 is big and flat) with the glidelock bracelet and no cyclops?

    I‘ve made my decision :D

Regarding your 3 choices I'd figure out where this fits in the rotation and if you really need a date complication. If you don't need a date then the 14060 is the obvious choice but if you do my heart says 16600 ( full disclosure I own one) but my head says SDK4000! The discontinued Sea Dweller gives you all you want with a superior bracelet BUT I'm not sure if you'd like the ceramic bezel seeing as it bothered you on 116610LN.

    Hi Mike

Yes I have 4 modern watches - 2 Pateks and 2 Rolex (Omega on the way at some point when the dealer gets stock though ive yet to pay for it).

Its is a strange one - just gone off modern glossy black Submariners!!

Guess im just craving the Bond / Rolex thing deep down and also ive never had a vintage Rolex (though I guess 14060 not strictly vintage but will be soon enough)

Date not too important for me since I have 3 other watches with Date. Im guessing everything is kind of pointing to a 5 digit series regardless!

Too close to a Modern Sub. If it had a matte black bezel, then it would be a contender. Although I’m pretty sure we will see a matte black bezel and dial on the next Sub update. The date completely ruins the symmetry though.

Don’t think Bond would wear a SubC. A 14060 though, oh yes.

What's the 2nd Rolex? I think you should just go for the 14060 if you are craving the Bond/vintage look and especially if you can find a NOS set!

White Ceramic Daytona & Ceramic Pepsi

Think the above ceramic choices kind of shows how im not liking the Black Subs for pure "Bond" reasons

The 14060 is ruined by the too small lume plots 8-)

Yeah ive read speculation about next gen sub possibly being matte - but are we far away from a Sub update? (bar new movement)

Wish I had paid more attention to the one I tried on in a pub a few years ago!!

All I remember is that I preferred it to my 114060

I never said it was bonehead. I said Bond wouldn’t wear a SubC. He would however wear a 14060. Try reading things properly before making replies that make no sense. Oh wait.... it’s you.

The small indices don’t bother me as it’s a nice change from my maxi dial Subs.

Should have purchased back then when they where available ADs and not moving at all because

    1. Sports models where not so popular in general
    2. Everybody who wanted a Sub went for the 16610

    Dear Sirs,

    Enlighten me:

    1. Is the one on the photo above a 14060?
    2. What dies "twoliner" mean after the 14060?
    3. And what does "5 digit Rolex" mean - compared with "the modern ceramics"?

    I would appreciate.
    Best,

    Yes its a 14060

The later versions had more text on the dial (4 lines)

5 digit series (14060). Current series is 6 digits. Current Submariner is the model 114060

    Hope that helps!!

Here’s mine on a NATO. My first Rolex and I still love it. Great choice!

Yes, I meanwhile did some research on the term "two-liner" as well.
The 14060 always being a ‘two-liner’, because it never included the ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ tag on its dial that comes from passing the COSC tests.
The 14060M came at first as a two-liner as well; only after ROLEX in 2007 sought official approval, its dial became a four-liner.

So, my additional question would be: Is the 14060M different from the 14060 only"inside"?
Or did the case vary as well, get bigger for example?

    Best regards,

I believe the case is identical

Everything is identical except the movement. The old movement was capable of COSC certification though. They just didn’t bother certifying it as a chronometer to keep the RRP down.

Rolex trying to keep the RRP down? It truly was a different time.

Nice behind the scenes piece on Bremont on a programme called made in Britain, bit of watchmaking and testing footage too, interesting.

I know. They wanted definition between the Sub and the Sub Date. So people thought the Date was superior in more ways than just having a cyclops.

But the Air King was an easily available introduction model then too.

Browsing Sea Dweller / Sub porn on Instagram tonight and stumbled across this modded version of Higgys ceramic SS4K. With better finishing (or is that lighting or a smudge) it would look nearly perfect.

Maybe its a taste of whats to come from Rolex on the next gen divers (hopefully)

PS - its a “modded matte finished bezel via bead blasting by LA Watch Works”

Pics nicked from Insta (sorry dude)

That’s nice. I know for a fact Rolex were experimenting with matt ceramic finishes some years back when I first looked at the SD4000. All they have to do is slim the lugs and crown guards out, add a domed sapphire, matte dial and we will have the best Sub yet.

Don‘t put too much hope into matte ceramic.

I have a Ceramic IWC and every contact with metal leaves traces in the material which can‘t be easily wiped off

I am afraid that making bezels matte will lead to a similar issue.
