I'm a big supporter of the the reintroduction of SPECTRE & Blofeld but I think they should be reinterpreted for modern times. I liked Benedict Cumberbatch's terrorist in STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS & think Blofeld could be similar. Mark Strong would make an excellent candidate for the role if they decide to go down the iconic bald route. Otherwise, Cillian Murphy has a suave creepiness that could be put to good use.
That said, I do agree with those that have mentioned Frank Langella & Stellan Skarsgaard as potential heads of SPECTRE if EON chose to look for an older actor with gravitas.
Okay, Wiseman was older than I thought - still the point is, Hopkins is surely in his 70s and these villains at that age would either have made it by then or have given up the ghost! What is needed is a mature manner. Le Chiffre in CR novel is basically a bloke on the make. Yes, he talks to Bond like he's a father, but you can have that sort of manner in your 20s. Most of the recent villains from Renard to Rodriguez, act like stroppy teens.
Being accused of copying hasn't worried them in the past!
I suggested Rickman a while back and was told he's too old (with which I disagreed). Gary Oldman is another dream Bond baddie of mine- some felt he was too familiar though.
I would like to se a more unconventional casting choice, such as Stephen Fry. I would really like to see him in a serious villan role. Fry is tall and heavy-set, Mensa-level smart and a good actor. It could be interesting.

Wouldn't Alan Rickman possibly make a perfect, almost flemingesque Blofeld?
I think Hans Gruber's "brother," Jeremy Irons, would make an okay Blofeld, judging from his East German villain in Die Hard 3.

I have already suggested Stephen Fry to shake things up. Another interesting candidate would be Rupert Everett. I don't think I've seen him play a villan. He is large and would be convincing as a physical threath to Bond. Give him a short haircut and a hint of a central European accent and he is Blofeld!

I seem to remember Blofeld was a big, heavyset man with short, black hair. I think Frank Langella and Stellan Skarsgård are the best candidates so far. Lawrence Fishburne is a good actor, but I have problems envisioning a black American with that name.

I agree about Philip Seymour Hoffman. It doesn't matter he's played a baddie in another spy franchise. He's a versatile performer & wouldn't detract from his casting in Bond. And he's damn good at urbane charm with a sinister edger. Check him out in Paul Thomas Anderson's THE MASTER.

He would, but having verged on a Bond-Baddie in Die Hard, I suspect EON would steer well clear of having him for fear of being accused of copying.

Yes! especially if Blofeld's face was to be hidden as he has a good voice. Deep, which could be used to sinister effect a la Eric Pohlmann.
