Skyfall from grace

I mentioned this on my previous thread but just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.

When I first seem Skyfall in the cinema and bought it on Blu-Ray I thought it was one of the best bonds ever and continued to watch it once a week or so for about a month but ever since I left it alone for a few months and then returned to it, I just don't see it in the same light anymore. It's still a very well crafted Bond film but I actually now think it's a little boring and lacks any standout action scenes (apart from PTS and Ending). I now rank it much lower on my list overall and just feel that it's one of those bonds you really need to be in the right mood in order to watch it. My opinion will more than likely change again soon but for now Skyfall sits as my 14th favourite Bond.

I think you may be suffering from 'overexposure'....watching it that often is bound to have an effect...leave it for six months and watch it again, see how you feel about it then...

I watch it last week for the first time in months but I just couldn't recapture the feelings I had for it the first few times I seen it. Maybe the novelty of it has just worn thin

I think that happens with most films doesn't it ? The first few viewings are special/exciting as you are constantly finding 'new' things to see/observe...

Reminds me of that joke Fletch tells Blanco to cheer him up in Porridge, about the 85 year old complaining he and his wife have noticed their sex drive going off.

'Your sex drive's on the wane?' says the astonished doctor. 'When did you notice that?'
'Twice last night, and then again this morning'.

I love SKYFALL as much now as I did on its release. It's become my new SPY WHO LOVED ME - a Bond I go to for comfort viewing. But it's peculiar in the Bond canon in that I also think it a quality film. 'Comfort viewing' & 'quality' are not always mutual in my experience. I rather like the fact it bucks a few trends & isn't over-burdened with action set-pieces. In the latter respect it reminds me of an early '60s Bond. I don't think its structure should necessarily set a new stylistic prededent but its nice to have a Bond film now & again (OHMSS & LTK are others) that does its own thing. For me, the Craig era continues to shape up very nicely.

Every time you watch a film you spot new things. Eventually this either errodes or boosts your love of it.

For me CR-06 is my ultimate Bond, great story, fantastic locations, wonderful cast, etc. DAD and QoS have improved dramatically in my eyes on additional viewings (the latter on slowplay). I think a lot of folk got caught up in the Skyfall hype. The fact it took longer than planned to get it greenlit would add to that. Without those elements, over time some expectations will diminish. Personally, I thought Skyfall was a great film and a very good Bond, but a bit overated compared to filmed history. (FRWL, FYEO, TLD, TWINE, and CR-06 by comparrison.)
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

My view of CR and QoS has changed very little since I first seen them: I've always loved CR and I've always been irritated by QoS. I think I did get caught up in the Skyfall hype upon release because I thought it was better than CR (shame on me) now I think it pretty ridiculous to compare the two. Maybe someday it will shoot back up the rankings

For me, I just watched it for the first time in about five months, and I do agree that it wasn't as great as it was the first ten times I saw it :p

But I still view it very highly. It's definitely in my top 5 Bonds. I have it sitting at number 3 in my signature, but it probably comes in at 4 or 5. I still think it's a great film.

Skyfall from Grace to last place on my Bond ranking. The great cinematography and excellent cast cannot save the piss-poor writing and moronic storyline.
    My current 10 favorite:

    1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

I'm pretty on the same page as you, Big Tam. I still think Casino Royale is better, but Skyfall is a terrific Bond film. I enjoy it just as much now as I did when I first saw it in the theater.

Whereabouts did SF sit in your rankings when you first seen it? ( just out of curiosity)

Pity my sex life is not like that these days

    Well, I was initially unimpressed, but I've warmed to it a bit since then. It's a good, but not great, Bond movie IMO. I like Craig's first two much, much more. -{

Interesting. I'm afraid I still rank it a heck of a lot higher up than QoS. Can still enjoy that film from time to time though

I watched it only once on dvd, after only seeing it in the theater several months before, and felt the same. Also the plot started to bother me immediately after I'd seen it for the first time. And now; the more I think about it the more I feel that only MR and YOLT rank worse plotwise.

Oh; and Bond looks terrible almost the entire movie, the Lodge Looks are a classic though and IMHO is going to live forever!

It's overrated for me and isn't even the best of the Craig Bonds -- that is still Casino Royale. However, Skyfall makes it into my top ten:

    Goldfinger
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    From Russia with Love
    Dr. No
    Casino Royale
    You Only Live Twice
    Thunderball
    Skyfall
    The Living Daylights
    For Your Eyes Only

I compare it to Goldeneye in that it has the "undeserved advantage" of being "successful" because the Bond public was starving for a new Bond film after such a long layoff, and the hype machine was injested by critics and fans despite the 2 films containing bits of mediocrity
  • Napoleon PluralNapoleon Plural LondonPosts: 10,467MI6 Agent
Yeah, that sounds about right. Helps that the film before that wasn't universally loved either.

Nobody had to love it. Folk loved CR (though I didn't) and that pulled them in to see QoS. Anyway, Bond is like Xmas these days, people go see the films whether they're a believer or not, so long as isn't described by the press as a turkey, and QoS isn't a turkey anyway.

You only have to get everyone to see the film once for it to make a bucketload of cash.

So I don't really believe SF is a top level Bond film, I merely succumbed to the hype? Thanks, I didn't realize that. 8-)

Of course you believe it. You must. You have no choice. :))

Seriously, once I bought into the idea that Severine was a seasoned player now and not the victim she presents herself as to Bond, the movie was fine for me. Not top shelf, but okay. Kind of swiss-cheesy, but I like cheese.

I was speaking in generalities regarding the "Best Bond Ever!" type language I remember hearing back in 2012 after the London premeire....(If i recall, the film was realeased about 2 weeks later here in the States)....
If you like it, that's fine, but there are several elements about it that really bug me

It seems that everyone on this board puts TMWTGG at the bottom of the barrel, but the scenery is spectacular, the villian is great, and the film has a REAL stunt involving a spinning car !!!

Compare that with Skyfall's tightwad location budget, excessive CGI, and sometimes confusing storyline

TMWTGG was a film that was released almost 40 years ago, and so I expect some progress in terms of the majestic globe trotting escapism that Bond films represent ..........To me, Skyfall represents a step backwards in terms of elements that make the series realevent to me
