TND drill??

When Carvers crew fires the drill into HMS Devonshire at the beginning of the film, how the hell does this work? :# I understand what they are doing obviously but surely it cannot be done. The drill would be able to move forward in the water perfectly but when Stamper says "Let's go upstairs" and "go left" surely it must come up out of the water and so won't manoeuvre...it defies logic.

Also I've often wondered how did they get the drill back aboard the stealth ship??
I know Bond films are not known for being totally realistic but I think this is just a tad ridiculous and spoils the sequence when you think on it.
....and the best he ever managed was a sermon on the mount.

    In short of popping in the disc for me to verify, doesn't the drill have propulsion capabilities as well as a tethered control mechanism, like the TOW missles used by the military? With those, I would think it is maneuverable in the way it was depicted. Then again as with most Bond film technology, much of it is fictionalized with implied capability, like the rebreather and the vertical landing rocket in YOLT, which only became possible in real life recently.

    I rewatched TND last night and I thought the same thing. The drill wouldn't be possible to propell the drill without water. It's possible that the drill had some kind of rocket that kicked in when it left the water, but it seems far-fetched and impractical. I actually didn't think of how they retreaved the drill after the Royal Navy vessel sunk. Since the drill supposedly tuned several times inside the ship it's pretty imposible to let it back up. Perhaps it just drilled a hole back out again? I do feel they should have come up with a better idea. Perhaps a super-cativation torpedo?

    Actually I think the Russians have those. They train them to swim up close to the target ship with a bomb strapped to the dolphin and the bomb attaches to the hull. Knowing the Russians I doubt there is spent much time and energy on saving the dolphins. It was perhaps a joke suggestion, but it would have been a much better idea than the drill B-)

    I don't know if this is true or a myth but, it's said the Americans tried to train dolphins
    For some suicide attacks, although when released into open water they showed their
    Superior intelligence by swimming off, :))

    Oh, I just read Russia has transfered their military dolphin program to Iran. Hence we can assume there are suicide dolphins :o

    If the drill was controlled by a cable, how was Bond able to kill Carver in the end? The drill seemed to be remotely controlled then.

    Iran also has a coastline to the Arabian Gulf, a sea route not unimportant to the US and the west.
    I think bomb dolphins sounds very Bondian and also believable.

    I don't see how remote-controled electrical signals can't be used to control dolphins. The sinking of the Devonshire could have been a tense and beautiful scene in this version.

    The drill moved around by flooding each compartment it wanted to go into. If it wanted to go "upstairs" it would flood the room it's in, then slowly puncture the ceiling until that room is also flooded, then move into the room.

    Yes, perhaps. But that way the drill would plug the hole between rooms while it was drilling and when it went complete through the wall it would clunk to the deck. Then it would be beached on the deck until the room was flooded. The dolphins are a better idea.

    Perhaps it was a one time thing. They had no intention of retrieving the drill. It was used once to sink the ship and gather all the missiles. Once all the missiles have been gathered and the ship sinks, they could care less if the drill is discovered. They've gotten what they wanted and are gone.

    It would've been nice if the drill had some sort of self destruct button on it. Dive in and get the missiles, once the missiles have been retrieved remotely detonate the drill and destroy everything.

    The drill that killed Carver could've been a second drill built for the same purpose as the first. Carver doesn't seem to be hurting for money. So it's probably no loss to him to build them for a one time use.

    But the drill doesn't only go down. In the movie (as far as I can recall) it doesn't go down at all, but up and to the side.

    Perhaps they drill more than one hole upwards, or the upstairs is already being flooded from below via the stairs/lift. And when the operator says "Let's go upstairs", the upstairs is already partially flooded.

    As far as getting the drill back is concerned, I assume that it just drilled it's way out once the ship was sinking, but we don't see this because it is purely logistical and at that point, the shooting of sailors and Carver's Murdoch-esque scheming are more relevant to the story.

    Incidentally, the ninja penguins are nowhere near silly enough for my liking. Kangaroo snipers surely hold greater appeal.
