Crockett & Jones

I recently purchased a pair of C&J Highbury shoes and now want to buy a pair of boots. I am debating between the Skye and the Islay (as worn in Skyfall). Does anyone have an opinion on which one to get? I realize the Islay is more Bond-esque, but the Skye seems more versatile and could be worn casually or with dress clothes. However, I do like the rubber soles on the Islay boot, as they can be worn in more inclement weather. Thanks for the help.

When I bought my Islay's (69 Jermyn St, London) I tried on the Skyes and asked about the possibility of having the dainite soles put on them and they said it would be possible but incur an additional £60.00. In the end up I went for the Islays anyway ;%

For what it's worth, the Skyes are beautiful boots however, since buying the Islay's I have been wearing them every second day and I'm absolutely delighted with them :D This time last year the only C&J footwear that appealed were the Tetbury boots and I didn't fancy the Islay's at all but to date I have the Tets and Highbury as well and I now wear the Islays most often.

With the weather in Scotland being regularly pretty sh*t, the dainite soles on my C&J's as well as my Ryder III's serve me well.

    Just my two bobs worth

Thanks for the input. Like you, I really like the Tetbury boots but they are so similar to the Highbury that for my next pair, I want a more rugged boot. How do the Tetbury boots compare to the Ryder III. The next pair of shoes I want to get are a new pair of Chukka boots, and I love other Tetbury boots in the brown suede.

I don't have either of the C&J boots mentioned but as has already been said, Dainite soles are easily installed by a competent repairer.

I have a pair of Trickers Stow that originally came on the heavy Commando sole that was forever picking up pebbles and other crud, so sent them to Richard Smith at Shoehealer in Doncaster who had his guys put Dainite soles on, they came back as if new from the factory, so if you go for the Skye's, it's an easy fix.

I ordered the Skyes as my first pair of C&Js. I live in Alaska, so with that in mind I had the Burlington Arcade shop do a resole with Dainite before shipping across the pond. Recently I've been dealing with the Birmingham shop and I'm sure they'd be able to accommodate this easily as well.

I only just recently received my C&Js made out of the same leather as the Islay, the boot is the same boot as the Islay, but built on the 325 last, a slightly less wide and bluntly toed last. I love the leather on these boots and I would say they are more rugged than my Skyes because of the scotch grain, but I would take my Skyes 10 times out of 10 if I had to choose between them. There is just something about the Skyes. Even if I didn't find the 335 last the Skyes are on to suit my foot shape perfectly, they are just such a damn sexy boot I couldn't imagine parting with them.

I was in the same boat as you a year ago, when trying to decide on my first C&J boot purchase. I sought the advice of the all wise Mantis, who owns both the Skye and the Islay. Mantis led me down the right path I believe when he swayed me towards the Skyes.

I had the same dilemma some time ago and ended up with different pair entirely, Northcote, and i love them! They look great dressed up or casual and after some time i went back for the Skye. I chose them over the Islays because they didn't have rubber soles (the Northcote do and i wanted something different) and i love them too. I tried the Islays on and they were great but i didn't like the way they looked with jeans as much as as the Skye.

    Your welcome!

The Tetbury boots I have are the black antique nubuck version (of course!) and they are a comfortable and versatile boot however, I prefer the last on the Ryder III's (Church 81) - it's comfier again as I have a slighly wider foot. That being said I've tried on the brown suede Tetbury in Jermyn St and they looked great with my 7 For All Mankind jeans (Straight cut). Daniel Craig has been seen with the brown Suede Tets and they looked great (think it was an interview in Esquire or GQ perhaps?).

I'd personally love a pair of the C&J Molten Chukka's but in black suede!

I'd be very tempted all-being-said to go for the Tetbury in brown suede but my Ryder III's have plenty wear left in them yet (they're my second pair) :D
