The centipede still creeps me out ! The thought of that thing nesting around
    My " gentleman's area " is disgusting,
    ( Brilliant bit of writing from Fleming ) -{

The Centipede makes more Sense though. You are likely to be more disgusted by something that has more Legs then eight :))
1.On Her Majesties Secret Service 2.The Living Daylights 3.license To Kill 4.The Spy Who Loved Me 5.Goldfinger

I have a memory of watching Blue Peter as a kid, it had loads if stuff about centipedes, that night
we were having sausages and mash. I couldn't eat the sausages :# kept seeing those centipedes.
I think most people have an inbuilt revulsion to them,

Plus you get a tarantula fix later on in the novel!
Actually, Fleming gives us a tarantula bonanza:
Carefully he brought his eyes close up to the little glowing forest. He inched the lighter up beside his face and suddenly pressed the lever. He caught a glimpse of tiny claws hooked through the mesh and of dozens of thick furry feet and of furry sacklike stomachs topped by big insect heads that seemed to be covered with eyes. The things plopped hurriedly off the wire on to the tin and scurried back and huddled in a grey-brown furry mass at the end of the cage.

And then the disgusting part where Bond has to "bash and bash into the writhing, sickening mess of blood and fur"! Definitely more disturbing than anything in the film.

It actually happened to me once, lying in bed I felt this little rich on my leg, then
realised it was moving UP !. Acting in my Best Bond way, I jumped out of Bed
( I like to say Shrieking like a marine, but I'm sure it was more like screaming
    Like a girl :)) )
Turned out to be a house spider ( but a really big one, at least 10mm across :D )
So I like to think I have lived the Bond lifestyle. :))

I saw that exact species of centipede on display. It looks nasty and almost prehistoric. Having anything (roaches, spiders, etc.) crawling on one in the bed is bad enough..can't imagine what that would be like. It's why I have a hard time watching those insects crawling on the characters scene in the Temple of Doom.

The centipede was whipping from side to side in its agony - five inches of grey-brown, shiny death. Bond hit it again. It burst open, yellowly.

    I love that last word.
