The strange thing is that when the films did try to be more serious, Moore did do a decent job of playing it a little harder.
For Your Eyes Only
Hadn't watched this one in a while, it was so good. Objectively I have to say it was Moore's best. I'd forgotten the cheesy phoney underwater close-ups, but other that that, it really holds up well. Lots of suspense, great ally in Columbo, the Bibi stuff wasn't as pervasive or annoying as I remembered, and the climax was excellent. If this had had a Barry score, it would be my top Moore Bond. As it is, it's a top 3 for me with TMWTGG & OP. With LALD & TSWLM right behind them.
Interesting that one poster mentioned Bond pushing the boy into the water as a jokey moment in TMWTGG - supposedly Moore being the pacifist that he is hated that and after filming the scene refused to do anything else like that in the future.
For me, the Tarzan yell on its own is enough to shoot OP to the top of the list. Then when you add the clown costume and the gorilla suit, it's just all too much. Even more than MR, I think the attempts at comedy and camp in OP come pretty damned close to ruining an otherwise great movie.

Without straying too far off topic, I feel the same way about John Ford's The Searchers. Many film fans consider it one of the greatest films ever made, yet it is filled with some awful attempts at comedy. I figure if you value Octopussy, you are willing to overlook some obvious flaws.
My current 10 favorite:
1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK
OP and FYEO just show the Jekyll/Hyde characteristics of EON's direction.
If you omit the lame attempts at humor (and there are many) what's left are actually decent cold war thrillers.

I agree, and that's why these two are my favorite Moore-era Bond movies.
FYEO was a lot more serious then what we had previously seen with Moore (Obviously) OP seemed like a middle of the Road Film. Probably trying to address those who thought that FYEO was a little too serious in some Aspects.
1.On Her Majesties Secret Service 2.The Living Daylights 3.license To Kill 4.The Spy Who Loved Me 5.Goldfinger
