Is OHMSS boring?

My father tried watching On Her Majesty's Secret Service with me just now and he said it was boring. And I said why? Is it because of George Lazenby and how he's playing the character he said yeah. But he also said that he didn't know why Bond was at Piz Gloria in the first place but then again we watched it with the volume way up high but with no subtitles and there was backround noise in the house such as people talking in the dining room...It made for a lousy viewing experience.

I personally don't find it boring at all but I could see why a casual Bond fan could, it's drastically different from every other film in the series.
....and the best he ever managed was a sermon on the mount.

I don't suppose your father has ever told you that OHMSS was boring. 8-)

Funny, I just made a comment in another thread that OHMSS has the least amount of action.

It reminds me of FRWL in the pacing department….where all the action scenes are squeezed in at the end.

Last month, I watched it with a friend because he was curious about Lazenby. Let's just say he found it rather slow.
    My current 10 favorite:

    1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

The more literate Bond films -- FRWL, OHMSS, FYEO, TLD, CR -- are character driven, rather than plot driven. That makes them slower and more introspective, even if they have action. The average reader/movie-goer prefers plot driven stories. That doesn't mean that they don't like characters, but plot is primarily what gets and keeps them interested. These stories are usually faster and more action-driven.

A masterpiece manages to blend the two, but there aren't a whole lot of those around in any kind of film category. Of the Bond films, GF probably comes closest (and I'd argue it is for what it is). It has all the action and fantasy, but we also get a significant look at Bond's world -- that's why it's the template for Bond and most of the Bond films -- and we really learn a lot about the villain and what makes him who he is. All the ingredients interweave, style and form, themes and symbols. But it's pulp rather than literature, so regardless, it only goes far.

No. To a casual fan I could see why they would find it boring while it might be one of the better movies I don't think it would be one to show to a casual or newbie to Bond. When I was a kid I used to find it boring then again I was 10 when I first saw it.

It's more plot driven than spectacle driven, unlike some Bond movies. Personally I don't find it boring at all!

It's great to have many different opinions and thoughts on all things Bond. -{ , That's what
makes AJB007 so much fun. Through many discussions over the years, I've changed my Mind
on many things, I used to hate QOS and posted many times on how bad it was, but from taking
on board others thoughts and ideas on it I slowly changed my mind and "Got" what the Producers
were trying to do. Even going back to basics, ( I was advised to go back and re-read the fantastic
Fleming novels, which I'm doing and would tell everyone who wants to know Bond to READ the books!
You'll really be suprised at. The amount of stuff you think of as Fact, which isn't :D )
There are plenty of action packed Bonds, TND, DAD, Moonraker etc all action driven with little or no
Story / Characterization, which are fun but OHMSS is very close to the novel, full of Characterization
and a great story. Infact ( IMHO) like Goldfinger the movie improves the story slightly by combining
the Love story with Tracy and the Attack on Piz Gloria.
As a kid It wasn't one of my Favourites ( I liked Jaws and the gadgets, and the jokes ) But I quickly
changed my mind and it rapidly became my #1 Bond film. So my advice to anyone is Go Back and read
the Books ( I'm reading Thunderball at the moment, haven't read it in years and it's Brilliant, Moves at a
    cracking pace ).
    On a side bar,
I think most member accept the the are only two types of Opinions, The wrong one and your own. :))
Bondtoys is always wrong :D ( especially about the Dalton films )
Sorry if my first post seemed flippant, it was just a joke. ;)

    What ?:)

OHMSS has ALWAYS been regarded as the Bond film with the most action...it has three 'action endings' for a start - or a finish :D

    There are some good articles wriiten on OHMSS and its abundance of action in the old 007 Magazines...you should try and find them -{

I didn't like OHMSS for a long time either. Bond falling in love & getting married...? That's what ordinary people do & Bond's not supposed to ordinary. But as one gets older one tires of endless action set-pieces & looks forward to a bit of breathing space between the thrills & spills. It's called narrative pacing & this OHMSS does this very well (as does CASINO ROYALE latterly). Seeing a bit more of Bond & his world actually makes him a more engaging character. And I truly believe Lazenby's performance helps in this respect.
And to cap it all, there's a rich irony in that starting with Bond's escape from Piz Gloria, OHMSS probably has more excitement than any other 007 film of the era.
