Roger and Dan are the same kind of Bond IMO...

I knew that'd get your attention. :))

What I mean by this is that I totally enjoy both actors and their different takes on the character, but to me, both of them are not 'my real' idea of Bond (cinematically speaking).

To ME, Sean WAS Bond.
George did a great attempt and he certainly looked the part.
Tim harnessed so much of the Bond of the novels- I loved that.
Pierce mixed it up a bit, stayed reasonably serious, and also brought the fun back.

But, where Roger's films strayed into a serious lack of a harder edge, Dan's films have a target-lock on that hard edge. Both Roger's & Dan's films skate around the heart of what make Bond films so special to me: realism tainted by the absurd and OTT grounded in the ever-so-slightly possible.

Thoughts?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

All three have come across as Bond for me, but I still think Connery is the best.

Sean is so stuck in Peoples Minds as Bond, when the Character is being Referenced in Cartoons (Simpsons and Family Guy for Instance) it's always in his image and Mannerisms.

All six actors are terrific for the eras they played the role in. I won't have a bad word said against any of them. :)

No Bad Bonds, they might have done the odd weak Bond film ;) but
All the actors have been fine. :)

I totally agree. Like I said, although Roger & Dan aren't my idea of bond, they are both still excellent.

Justin Bieber will be the first bad Bond... :D

You certainly got my attention! When I first read the heading I thought you had gone round the bend! Glad that isn't the case. As I'm sure everyone knows by now, I agree with the "Sean WAS Bond" sentiment. That being said, I have enjoyed aspects of the other actors' take on Bond. And although I see what you're saying about Moore and Craig being at the opposite ends of the "core" of the cinematic Bond, I think it could be argued that Craig strays much further in one direction than Moore does in the other. To me it appears that Connery, Lazenby, Brosnan and even Dalton mixed in more humor in their films than Craig does (or should I say the writers mixed in more humor), and that takes Craig a little further out on the edge. Still, I'm not complaining because if I have to choose I prefer more of the harder edge than the humor. So far, only Connery got the mix just right, and that's one of the reasons that for me "Sean Was Bond"! :D

Even though Dalton is my favourite, Brosnan is my 'cool' Bond, and Lazenby is my 'excellent experiment' Bond, really, after Thunderball & You Only Live Twice, no one could ever do it better all-around. I really don't believe anyone ever will, unless some crazy talented unknown can blow us all away some day...

By far Connery is the best Bond. But to me you could say that Moore is the best movie Bond. How he changed the Bond movies and they've never really gone back to the Dr. No and From Russia with Love days. The best book Bond to me is Dalton. He's the one I usually visualize doing the stuff in the books.

The others are kind of a mix.

Help me out here. Connery played Bond in the movies and he's the best Bond, but he's not the best movie Bond? I'm confused, but maybe you mean Connery was best at portraying Bond, but Moore appeared in the best Bond movies. Am I close?

I'm guessing SilentSpy might Mean that Moore changed the perceived role
of Bond as played by Connery ( and the novels ) to HIS own unique interpretation
of the role, and that until Craig came along. The other actors gave us their version
of how Sir Roger played Bond ? :)

For the first 20 movies the producers were choosing an actor who can play a certain pre-existing vision of Bond, which required fitting certain requirements, including physical looks. Then, after Pierce Brosnan, they decided that they were going to choose an actor and create (re-create) a Bond that this actor could play – and Daniel Craig came along. I’m not a fan of him playing Bond, but he has certainly changed a lot, so after him anything new and revolutionary will be easier to do. How about an Indian Bond, for instance? Or a Latino Bond? Perhaps a female Bond? So to me Moore and Connery have a lot more in common than Craig and any other previous Bond.

Also with the reboot, Bond was a " rough diamond " who would evolve in to
Our traditional ( yet contemporary ;) ) Bond. Something they haven't done before.

This is what I mean. If you ask, who is the best Bond. It's Connery by far. He started it and no one has come close to what he did. But if you ask who is the best movie Bond. In the scope of what the Bond movies have become and what elements they stand for. Then it's Moore. This is why.

Even though Connery probably started the more over the top humorous Bond in You Only Live Twice. It is that humor that changed Bond I think more than the gadgets that Connery talked about starting in Goldfinger. You Only Live Twice is also where you can start to see some of what critics talk about as the tied together action sequences. Osato's people shoot at Bond in front of the building in broad daylight! Then there is another daylight dockyards chase. Or if not You Only Live Twice, you can really point to Diamonds Are Forever as the real turning point for humorous Bond.

With all this, it is really Roger Moore that perfected that formula. The more light humor with over the top crazy stunts. That's the movie Bond that I think people still look to see. That stuff has made it into Dalton movies, Bronsan movies from the beginning with the motorcycle off the cliff scene in Goldeneye. To Skyfall, with Daniel Craig riding a motorcycle on rooftops and coming close to topping Zorin's fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. That's what I'm trying to get at.

Sorta. Bond in Dr. No certainly isn't quite as predictable and polished as he would become later, nor is he in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He is cool and confident, but he makes mistakes and can be hurt. To me, it isn't until after the Connery era that Bond truly becomes the cliche we've come to expect.

I'll admit that it's one of my faves, but that's because of Connery & Barry. If not for them, it would have been just another Flint movie to me (not that I dislike Flint). :))

I basically agree, although I have to admit that while I enjoyed DAF (mostly for Connery), that movie started the transformation of Bond into the Roger Moore-like persona.
