M recruited Bond because he saw the good in him he knows hes a rough diamond who gets the job done.
Interesting, but I think this point of view is more a construct of the film Casino Royale than anything written in the novels. I'm not sure which, but in one of the novels I seem to recall Bond reflecting that he's a 'blunt instrument' for the Secret Service, but at no point does M ever suggest he's a rough diamond.
In fact, throughout the earlier novels, M's only summation of Bond is that he's reliable. And by the time of YOLT, in Bond's obituary, M ascribes Bond to have that "Nelson Touch" in moments of the highest emergency, and notes that Bond performed his duties with "outstanding bravery and distinction, although occasionally, through an impetuous strain in his nature, with a streak of the foolhardy that brought him into conflict with higher authority" - hardly then a rough diamond.
I've been reading them for damn near fifty years and practically have them memorised. As said above, Sir Miles Messervy functions as Bond's father figure in a clear way. And yes, I was already aware of who Admiral Godfrey was, too. There isn't anything in the novels about M recruiting Bond. And Brosnan was an asset, not an error.
+ 1
I've never thought if it before, but who recrouited Bond?
After reading Ben Macintyre's superb book about Kim Philby I'm inclined to think Bond was recruited into MI6 solely based on his family tree and what schools he went to, just like everyone else
Not at all hes a modernisation of man of similar operations background to modernise the charchter. What I object to is changing sex and race just for sake of trying something the total opposite off what came previously is gimicky and a total kop out bow down to positive discrimination. Yo couldnt have the same M that M was middle aged in 1960 but atleast they brought in someone of a similar modernised version of what Fleming created. Dench was based on Ms Remington the actual head of MI6 at the time but I just think bond got bad previously when it tried to match the times which led to some bad bond movies and a confussed time line just my opinion they should have kept it all set back in the 50's & 60's when real espionage was taking place.
You only live twice: Once when you are born. And once when you look death in the face.
Given the state of the world today, I'd say quite a bit
of espionage is still going on, with our secret service
full of different races, sex and religions. Not all spies
are middleaged white blokes. )

What??? Your points stupid because bond is white & middle aged. And thats the whole point duh!. Maybe there is a lack of intelligence here but please read before posting. Spy's are not what they were spys now are cyber spys the ground work is now done with satalites and drones. Hence the whole point of M's division coming under political fire as obsolete. And bond described as a cold war relic. Think about what the term positive discrimination means as its not a good thing its an oppertunity given not on merit but to avoid being accused of prejudice my non white friends would say they would always rather get a job on merit rather than their race to be a cpany poster boy.

I might be stupid, but I always try and be polite and friendly, after all

You could be right, I don't know, My basic premise is that if the Bond
Film don't change or evolve, they will become stale and irrelevant, and
I don't want that. -{

Certainly a lack of manners !
Cyber spying is very good but you cannot beat HUMINT - never will, never can -{
James007Sweeney, I wouldn't bring up "poor intentions" if I were you. As well as being inaccurate, you are coming across as rude and provocative. Be more careful in your postings if you intend to remain a member here- and yes, that is a warning.

There is still old fashioned spying going on. To illustrate the point, the leader of the PST (the brilliantly named Norwegian equivalent of MI6) let it slip in a public hearing that we have spies in Northern Pakistan. She is now the former leader of PST )
This also shows why WASP's are often not ideal spies nowadays: much of the spying goes on in places where a blonde, blue-eyed person sticks out like a sore thumb. On the other hand some people were recruited to our military inteligence partly because of their northern looks. It turns out Pakistani officers and tribal leaders become very talkative when chatting to a pretty blonde woman ....
Sad really, I did PM him, apologising for not getting off on the right foot and
hoping that we'd end up pulling each others legs over our different views on
Bond, but I think he had already decided to pull the trigger and leave.

"James Bond: James Bond is a blunt instrument wielded by a Government Department. He is quiet, hard, ruthless, sardonic, fatalistic."

Be far too visible.
You are a positive whippersnapper compared to some of us !
