In the first half of the movie, we are introduced to Le Chiffre. A money man with a mysterious background, he's working with some pretty unpleasant characters- he is entrusted with their money. He invests it unwisely in an attempt to make some profit for himself, and loses it. He knows that his life is forfeit unless he can replace the money quickly, and decides to gamble. All in the novel, all in the first half of the movie- maybe 10%?
Naturally we are also introduced* to James Bond, Agent 007 of the British Secret Service etc etc and his boss M. We are told about two kills he made before becoming a Double-0**. All in the novel, all in the first half of the movie. Easy 20%, maybe more.
* first book; reboot film
** the details are different, granted
Add those two to Peppermill's 25% above and you get... about 55%.
Edit- but this is all off-topic, fun though it is, so I'd like to ask Peppermill to follow up on his suggestion above and open a new thread. I'd be happy to do that myself later if that suits?
) I think theres a factory in Norway churning those Tall, blonde actresses out.
There are lots of tall, blonde stunners, but few of them become actresses.
But serioulsly: isn't it likely that casting news and the choise of new DP, perhaps even the title might be made public as if the start of filming still was in October?
The reason for the delay is polishing of the script, mainly dialogue stuff and not the plot, so there is no reason to wait with cast and crew decitions? That is, other than letting people like us and the media speculate for some more months
Well, we didn't learn the title to Skyfall until October 3, 2011, a month before shooting started and that wasn't confirmed by EON until the press conference on 11/3. Bernice Merlohe wasn't announced until October 6, Javier Bardem didn't confirm that he was involved in October 11, Fiennes wasn't announced until the PC on 11/3, serious news regarding location scouting didn't occur until Auguist 2011. Hell, nobody knew that Whishaw was going to be Q until three weeks after shooting started.
EON's been making movies about MI6 for so long they think they are the Secret Service.
Well, we certanly won't get anything official before October. The question is if they will make anything official then or wait until Novermber/December. There are two schools of thought: They can wait until right before shooting starts to keep the speculations going in the press to generate publicity or they tell us much earlier because teh contracts are signed and it will leak anyway.
Well, given that the Bond films are a big hit again, there's little motivation for the PR machine at EON to do anything but keep people speculating. People are going to build in anticipation till the opening day, and that just means more people are likely to come see the movie.
IMHO Casino Royale was 20% Fleming at best. The first hour of the movie didn't have anything from the novel in it and the second half not as much as most people seem to think.
I'd go for 40-50% overall. The main characters and their relationships (Bond, Vesper, Le Chiffre, Leiter, Mathis, M), the thrust behind the plot (Le Chiffre has gambled his employers money and must get it back or die- he chooses to gamble at Casino Royale), etc etc- I could elaborate but you already know- all come from Fleming, even down to dialogue (or paraphrases of it anyway).
And that's a far higher proportion of original Fleming than any film since.... 1981?
