    Hallo, bartender.
I can't tell you how disapointed I am that no-one has commented on my splendid "spy school" thread ........ I can't tell you since it would make me seem shallow, whiny and self-centered. Actually, forget I ever mentioned it.
Just hand me a coke Zero, please :#

Red weather warning, first time in Scotland (usually no worse than amber warnings). Nobody to travel unless vital. Staying home!

I don't quite understand why it's a red weather warning. I mean, if that's not a "white weather warning" then what on earth possibly could be?

I heard that red warning on the radio today, whilst returning back from an abandoned job.....which took me nearly 2 hours to get to (though only 12 miles away) because of the snow .
good luck north of the border, not wise to ignore a red warning I guess, unless you are Norwegian of course. :007)

It worked! I've always wanted to 'out' a spy, and I just did! Right, where do I apply to enter the world of counter espionage?

Yes, red weather warning because of how many cm of fresh snow? 2? 5?

    Damn, you tricked me! :))
You must be a Norwegian citizen, 18-27 years old, very smart and quick to pick up languages, reasonably fit and able to get the highest level of security clearance. I think I can find the application form online.

Those conditions wouldn't be Red Alert here, it would just be winter :)
I visited a school were the children had to stay outside in the breaks if it was warmer than 18 degree celcius, even if they were international pop stars

Some questions to the British here:
    - you use winter tyres, I presume?
    - do you use winter tyres with spikes?
    - do truck drivers bring chaines to put on the tyres in case the winter tyres don't cut it?
    - are wood stoves (correct term?) common in people's homes?

We are just not equipped to deal with any kind of snowfall here which only happens every 5-10 years on average. The temp here is already -6 with the windchill the real feel temperature is -14.

5-10 years? I guess it's what my future will look like.
Did you know there is snow in Rome and +2 degrees in Spitsbergen/Svalbard?
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 37,870Chief of Staff
Yes to the winter tyres, no to everything else (that's everything else N24 asked, not Higgns' nonsense).
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,340MI6 Agent
Not having a non-electric heating source that can also heat food is risky. All major disasters/attacks that realistically hit a country will lead to long-term power-cuts. If you only have winter tyres, but these weather conditions are rare, you don't need to worry. Just park the car for a few days.
    Some tips for winter driving:
    - nice and steady does it. Try to avoid sudden braking or steering.
    - never try to brake and steer at the same time.
    - if the car loses friction with the road - be quick and good luck. Remember not to brake and steer at the same time!

Many people have wood stoves, I had two in my last house, in fact this current house is the only home I've lived in that doesn't have a stove or open fire place.
We have snow chains for our Mercedes van, though they've only been used once. Even so we have them in the back at the moment.

    Not British, but

    - I have proper snow tires on my car from November - Easter. Neighbors are mostly using all-season (which are crap in summer and winter imo)
    - spikes are not allowed here
    - some truck drivers have chains - but they are in the minority
    - we have a fireplace here that we are using after 18:00 usually during the winter

Here drivers can be fine for not having winter tyres after a certain date, but in large urban areas you can be fined for having spikes. In my opinion winter tyres are fine under most winter conditions, but under icy conditions they are lethal.
Truck drivers without the proper tyres and chains can be grounded by the police until they are prepare.

A coffee please - I am up at this unearthly hour of 5.30am as the aircon has packed in and it's getting hot (78F) - better than the UK though at the moment :D

Turned out chilly again. I'd better put the thick wool fleece blanket in Holly's basket.

Not very about -7 here in Yorkshire, but real feel temperature is -19
I woke up to about 12cm of snow this morning and temperature never rose over freezing, it's been snowing since about 5pm so we've got another 10cm perhaps. Nothing major compared to some countries, but disruptive here, we are not in the red weather warning zone.

Here it's about - 13, I think. That's pretty cold for being at the coast in southern Norway.
It's perfect for sitting in a good chair, drinking hot chocolate and reading a good book :)
Enjoy the cold weather and don't forget to look though the window and notice how beautiful snow is.

I love the snow, I'm drinking hot chocolate at the moment and reading Jo Nesbo, my little boy made his first snowman today with a little help from me, and just generally moved snow around with his tractor and trailer. :)
