On Her Majesty's Secret Service

While archiving for the Designing 007 exhibition a number of ex-crew members were approached by myself to see if they had any unique souvenirs from their time working on the Bond movies? Some revealed things which they were not prepared to loan for exhibition but were happy to discuss their treasures and recall their contributions to Mr Bond's on screen exploits. One such crew member had worked on OHMSS at Pinewood studios and on location where he had the pleasure of handing Mr Lazenby an STGW57 rifle for the photo shoots which can also be seen in documentary footage. This was the rifle which was carried by Blofeld's on skis henchmen although some were fortunate enough to be carrying fibreglass stunt rifles created by the late great John Stears. The STGW57 is considered to be the Rolls Royce of assault rifles to specialist weapons collectors and can command high premiums even without a Bond connection but what was shown to me on the day pretty much blew my socks off, the rifle George had handled back in 1969, an STGW57 with the serial number: 0057. It still retained it's original leather service sling, fixed folding bipod and flip up front & rear sights. The rifle had pretty much been moth balled back in 69 when the production had wrapped. It is hoped one day this fantastic piece of Bond history will take up it's rightful place in the official Bond Archive. It goes without saying that it is being seen here on AJB007 for the first time -{

    Just when you think Donk has impressed you - he goes and does this :o

    A unique piece from my favourite film - such a pity these items don't go on display but probably for the best in the long term that someone from the crew kept it and obviously treasured it...

    Thanks again, Donk -{

    Wow, thank you for posting! Just to clarify, this particular prop rifle is different from the Stears fiberglass rifles that had the strobe lights? Those other effects rifles looked a bit chunkier, perhaps because they contained the bulky strobe bulbs and battery packs.

    I have only seen one of these in real life, when it was recovered from a PIRA hide in a block of flats in West Belfast. Fantastic to see this one, I want !!! B-)
