YOLT just seems to drag in Places (Ducks to avoid the flying Chairs)
Both films are spectacular in ways that aren't seen any more, but YOLT has the edge.
The volcano set is jaw-dropping, especially when seen on the big screen, and TSWLM's tanker set is simply a variation on it.
Both films have genuinely beautiful cinematography, there's not much in it there.
YOLT's score knocks spots off TSWLM's.
Connery (at low power) beats Moore (on top form).
There's more Fleming in YOLT.
YOLT is less calculated.
The Kobe docks fight scene (the helicopter shot in particular) is worth the price of admission alone.
Karin Dor is IMHO the sexiest Bond girl ever.
(Don't get me wrong, I love TSWLM too)
I agree with every point except your last one - Karin Dor does nothing for me. But that's a minor quibble that doesn't diminish my love for YOLT the slightest bit.
Well... TSWLM has Caroline Munroe... but she got axed too quickly!
YOLT is Connery. Barry. 60's.

Excellent production values, a more memorable title song, The Lotus trumping Little Nellie, more memorable Bond henchman, and an even more alluring Bond girl. :x
I would choose...er...er
YOLT is just so atmospheric with Japan a really beautiful setting then you have Spectre at their peak with Plesances's Blofeld better than Stromberg for me. Nancy Sinatra's theme song is so soothing with that slight oriental twang, also quite like Aki and Kissy and I actually don't think Connery's performance was that bad at all. And the Volcano lair...
TSWLM is an epic, a gigantic adventure. You have some brilliant action sequences including one of the best PTS's and some really iconic characters in Triple X and Jaws who really is perhaps one of Bond's toughest and most menacing adversaries. Cant say a bad word about Moore here and Marvin Hamlisch's score is just inspired.
My heart is saying YOLT but Lewis Gilbert did a great job on both.
Yes, yes and yes! {[]
Aside from the last two points - about Karin Dor and loving The Spy Who Loved Me, I have to agree.
You Only Live Twice may be, in my view, the weakest of the 60s, and Connery may not have been at his best, but it was still a decent film. Aside from the scenes you referred to, there was also the Little Nellie sequence which was immensely enjoyable.
In contrast, I think The Spy Who Loved Me is vastly overrated. The name "Agent XXX" is too generic (don't EON have any imagination anymore?), Barbara Bach is hopelessly miscast (never looked like she could hurt a fly, let alone kill Bond), and General Gogol was superfluous. It only got better when Bond was taken on board Stromberg's ship (whatever it's called, I can't remember now).
1) The Spy Who Loved Me 2) On Her Majesty's Secret Service 3) GoldenEye 4) Casino Royale 5) Goldfinger
Most critics of Spy tend to single out Barbara Bach's "bad acting", which I don't think is particularly fair or accurate. Triple-X is a well realized character, and certainly one of the better female role models in the overall Bond franchise. Being that this was shortly after the days of Jill St. John and Britt Ekland goofing around in bikinis, I'd say that EoN took a step in the right direction.

As opposed to DAF which had a real drag... ) -{
Being german, I never understood that parts of the male population fancied Dor in YOLT.
She was a good looking person but these red hair and her makeup where simply horrible.
I for my part prefer YOLT slightly for Barbel's reasons but in one part he's gotten it totally wrong:
In TSWLM, Moore scores out Connery in YOLT by miles!

Regarding an AJB handbook: Brilliant idea - if it's not too close to the AJB glossary {[]
