Yet another in the eternal "next James Bond" media mess...

This is an absolutely terrible article and frankly I wouldn't waste your time even reading it.

However, I can't find any mention on the forum yet, so for those who may be interested, here it is…

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Denzel-Washington-Really-Wants-Play-James-Bond-67118.html

Denzel Washington seriously…
When will some of the more narcissistic American actors understand this? James Bond is MI6, the UK government's Secret Intelligence Service… this totally rules out citizens of foreign powers. Yes even the USA.

    Good find, Alec 006!

    I'm not sure the writer of this article understands irony...

    Although on another thread, we have discussed how good a villain
    Denzel Washington would make for the Bond series, after all he is
    A terrific actor. -{

    Inaccurate piece of fluff. Two examples- Australia is not one of.the British Isles, and a US citizen was once actually signed for the part of Bond (John Gavin) which is more than "seriously considered".

    Don't blame Denzel, as that article is clearly nonsense. But as has been pointed out elsewhere, Americans have been considered for the role before (John Gavin and James Brolin). And just as British actors such as Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, and Christian Bale have taken on quintessentially American roles, it is not out of the realm of possibility that an American could play Bond. For me, that would only work if the actor is an unknown and if he can affect an impeccable accent.

    Agreed, I don't have a problem with an American playing Bond. -{

    Of course I have no problem with an actor of any nationality playing Bond… my problem would be any actor playing an American Bond.
    I kind of do blame Denzel to a small extent here, as whenever I have seen him interviewed he is one of those performers that seems to believe his own aura. A legend in his own mind. Anyway that is getting rather off topic.

    As in Fleming's novels and especially so since good old Bourne forced Bond to grow up and abandon what remained of Austin Powers or Niven's ghastly Casino Royale hatchet job, the character of an MI6 intelligence officer has to anchor itself in some manner to fact. In this case anyone in Bond's position with the SIS has to have British citizenship.

    My caveat… :) I did warn you all not to read the article :007)

    Another problem with American actor's is the accent. It always amazes me how UK actors and someone like Hugh Jackman can do such an authentic American accent yet whenever American's actors take a stab at an English/Irish/Scott's accent it's just embarrassing (with all due respects to Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, etc.).

    I generally agree with you, the accent poses a significant problem for the prospect of an American portraying Bond. That being said, being an American I'm not sure I would know if the accent sounds authentic enough. For example, I think Renee Zellweger's accent in the Bridget Jones movies is pretty convincing and, perhaps surprisingly, so is Denzel Washington's in For Queen & Country. How do my British friends here feel about those accents?

    I haven't seen For Queen and Country, but I do think Rene Zellwegger's accent in Bridget Jones was very credible.

    Having watched The Expendables 3 yesterday, I'm sure it's more than can be said for Jason Statham's American accent... :))

    :)) to be honest I don't think the "Stath" is trying for American. :D
    More mid-atlantic ;)

    That settles it then, Renee Zellweger for Bond no 7 :))
