TSWLM and OP had songs that were not named after the film. And were excellent entries in the Bond cannon. This is a superficial complaint, and is also premature since we haven't heard the song. I'm not particularly excited about Smith's selection, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until I hear what he has come up with and have a chance to judge it. Simply pathetic to see all of the lamenting and moaning in this thread without anything to go on.

I definitely agree with the shared sentiment that the Bond theme should be worked on and purposefully made an integral part of the score, so it's a little disappointing that they chose against that again.
At the risk of sounding out of touch/politically incorrect, I'm just going to put it out there, that my favorite Bond songs are when the male voice is distinctively masculine, or the female voice is distinctively feminine. Tom Jones belted out Thunderball with a beautiful masculine voice. Shirley Bassey, absolutely kills it on all of her songs...all distinctly feminine.
Just for the record to prevent presumptions, this has nothing to do with singers private lives. It has everything to do with how a song SOUNDS and how well that sound fits the Bond paradigm. And based on how Sam Smith sounds, I don't care for the choice.
Sam Smith has a very unique voice and can do soul, R&B and EDM (he has done some really good stuff with Disclosure and his duet with John Legend is beautiful.) I don't think that it will be anywhere near the quality of Skyfall but if it is a ballad, it could still be very special.
My reaction to this news isn't excitement or disappointment just..indifference. I wanted to feel enthused and I do think although he doesn't do a lot for me Sam Smith will produce a perfectly professional and serviceable theme song as Adele did. I just wanted to feel excited to hear it and I don't. After those Radiohead rumours serviced which got me pretty stoked tbh this just feels like a letdown..

I completely agree with you re: sound of voice. The Bond series has relatively maintained traditional gender roles so unless Spectre is going to change it up, I do prefer masculine voice for a male or feminine voice for female. If you're going to have a soft male voice, it needs to have some dramatic strength behind it- could be seductive, could be mysterious but it can't come across as weak, particularly when it opens the film.

Well, not much of a follower of Mr. Smith, but glad to hear of this progress. I will of course download it via iTunes on 25 September It's an interesting choice, as he is a bit high in the vocal range, but I expect a very Bondian tune nevertheless. It's an interesting fact that he's the first Brit male solo artist to do one since Tom Jones(!). As always, we shall see. Always good to add to my Bond theme playlist :007)

Apart from K D Lang, I've loved every Bond track so far... I :x the QoS theme... and until I hear Smith's version, I'll hold my opinion. He wouldn't be my first choice... but then, I don't like Jack White, but I loved his collaboration.

My objection to the reactions of some members is that we should wait to hear the song before judging it, regardless of what we may think about Smith's other work.
while I myself didn't care for his music till this moment I'll wait for the song to come out
