I totally agree that it was a failing of the Academy that John Barry never received an Oscar for his Bond work, but am sure that the five Oscars for his non-Bond music would have been some small consolation.

Agreed. I really enjoyed this song. One of the better songs Radiohead has put out in years. A lot of pain in the lyrics that I think really resonates with Bonds character.
Had a proper listen to the Radiohead song - very beautiful, mysterious, haunting and a nice sinister sounding middle section and of course Thom actually uses the word SPECTRE in the lyrics.
As a fan of SPECTRE and huge Radiohead fan also I'm a bit gutted this was never used however EON were obviously after a more commercial sounding track (with the flavour of the moment) so I'm at all not surprised that it was not used!!!
I imagine Radiohead wrote the whole thing with Jonny Greenwood composing all the orchestra sections unlike Smith who just laid down a vocal with his "team" of musicians.
Pity really but understand why!
I guess the punter who put down that huge bet on Radiohead being the SPECTRE song is gutted - he obviously had the correct insider info but it didn't quite pan out like he thought ) All makes sense now!

I agree. I loved MAD MAX: FURY ROAD but didn't think it quite worthy of such accolades. Perhaps the Academy is starting to embrace populist entertainment more as an art form.
Not entirely surprised Smith's song has been nominated. It's a cross-over song: Take out the brooding Bond stylings (sweeping strings & brass) & it'd easily pass as a conventional chart entry. Not sure if that's good or bad - I quite like it after many hearings.
I know all the "Bachman–Turner Overdrive" fans don't like it.
I think it's written more for my young, "with it" generation.
Not the "Squares" Daddy-oh ) ......... I for one will have my fingers

I am glad that Writing's On The Wall got a nomination. I hope that it does win, since it is the only award that Spectre is up for.
Like Big Tam, I am pretty surprised at all of the nominations for Mad Max: Fury Road, thought I have strong feeling it will win in the technical awards, unless Star Wars: The Force Awakens really blew the minds of the Academy members.

I was very pleased that Writing is on The Wall won, none of the other songs to me sounded that good. A big plus is this brings the total Oscar count for the James Bond series to five.

But at least the orchestra at the Oscars played Diamonds Are Forever last night, so that proves it's Oscar-worthy too. The orchestra also played the Live and Let Die and Casino Royale (1967) themes last night. A big night for Bond music!

Wow, Oscars for the artists and their Bond theme songs, two in a row! I'm proud for the Bond community ) With all the controversy about diversity in the Academy (where, if I remember correctly, there are a few hundred or even a couple thousand voting members from the film industry, of varying credentials), I think it's actually progressing along nicely...which is why we are seeing Bond theme songs winning Oscars and movies like Mad Max winning 6 Oscars (which would have been unthinkable for any of the original movies). So, as nice as this is, I still recognize that the Academy will have a different set of criteria vs. that of a film lover like me who includes the entertainment and enjoyment factors as important, of course on top of all those other "important" elements that make good movies, good.

I am pleased for Sam Smith, and since I saw Spectre feel the song in retrospect, is a better match to the film than Skyfall is. Still a bit weak on the orchestration, but that's me.
My concern is that the Academy will just palm off token gongs like this to Bond, as they already only throw second tier technical gongs to Sci Fi and Fantasy films.

The Radiohead song is so much better! The song really goes somewhere and doesn't hit a dead end like Smith's song. The song has the power that Smith's song lacks, and that power is necessary in a Bond film, especially considering the film that Spectre is. This song fits much better with the film.
Being named "Spectre" certainly helps too. There's no reason why the film's song shouldn't have been called that. It's not like trying to write a song called "Octopussy". I can't really understand what the lyrics are, but it wouldn't be hard to do better than Smith's lyrics. Having "Spectre" in the lyrics almost automatically makes the lyrics better.
But Radiohead lacks the mainstream power that Sam Smith has. Radiohead is not as popular as they once were. This song itself is also not as mainstream, with an unusual drum beat and some unorthodox harmonies, which I love!
