While I agree that Fleming's half is so much better, it would have been a much shorter movie if they'd stuck rigidly to the book. I think the expansion was called for and handled well. Today's audiences have different expectations- the camera/bomb sequence from the novel plus discovering Le Chiffre has Bond's room tapped would have been too small in scale.
You realise you're not only getting rid of the airport scene, but also the whole buildup up to that scene, which is basically the whole movie, don't you?
That would be only half the movie. The other half (Fleming's half) is so much better.
I actually wouldn't have minded if CR were about 15- 20 minutes shorter. I don't really like when they go much past, say 130 mins. Even at that films like OP and TLD seem to flow much better IMO. Bond shouldn't be Lawrence of Arabia.

The stakes for Le Chiffre's Baccarat game would have been "one mee-lee-on dollars" ) Yes, I agree that the adaptation of a 50+ year old novel was done extremely well and in keeping with how Fleming placed Bond a minute into the future.

CR is prob my top 3 pick with OHMSS and Thunderball.
After crazy repetitive viewings over the years I must admit the airport scene is prob the only one bit I find that drags on a bit. Judging also by the views above maybe it could've been edited a little shorter. The keying / bomb finale with 007 smiling with the cops all over him is class though, just feels forever to get to it!!!

The airport chase is like 7 minutes. 7 minutes of non stop action. I wouldn't call that "dragging on", but that's your opinion.

I think even action can drag on if it's not that interesting. I can't believe that sequence is only 7 minutes. I feels like twice that.

You would have a 65-75 minute movie. 8-)

Sorry, I corrected it.

The 747 blowing away the police car is epic though, makes the airport sequence for me!
"Better make that two."
Funny, I was told the same thing yesterday.
Sorry. That was an homage for TP.
