I don't get it. You seem a likable chap, and intelligent to boot. How can it be your least favourite yet MY third favourite? I understand not being fond of it, but sending it to the bottom? ?:)
Chrisisall, I've just seen this one. I could write exactly the same about you! Third favourite? The third spot ? ever? TND?
Pros:
--Xenia Onatopp, a great character played a fabulous actress; she made lifelong impression on an adolescent with active hormones and a lively imagination
--Alec Trevelyan, one of the few villains whom I thought was a legitimate match for Bond, primarily because he was something of a mirror-image of Bond
--"M"; Judi Dench was the perfect compliment to Brosnan (and later Craig); I was saddened by her death in Skyfall, as it meant we wouldn't be seeing any more of Dench in the role
Cons:
--as others have indicated, the score was particularly weak; I enjoyed the opening credits and thought Tina Turner's solo was excellent, but the remainder of the film's music left much to be desired
--I would have liked some sort of follow-up scene in which Bond and "M" reflect on Trevelyan's betrayal of MI6; the filmmakers did include a similar scene with Bond and Natalya, however
"The Dark Side of the Force has clouded their vision, my friend. Hundreds of senators are now under the influence of a Sith Lord called 'Darth Sidious.'" --Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus
Pros:
-Brosnan is great in his first entry.
-Great theme
-Great action scenes (especially the tank chase)
-Famke Jannsen rules as Xenia
-Strong Villain
Cons:
-None off the top of my head, like others have said the score isn't as big as other Bond films. But all of it is fitting.
GE is also my favorite Brosnan Bond. With the rest of his films, they tried coming up with better plots (and TWINE is the only other plot I liked as it and GE seemed more like Fleming territory than Pierce's other entries), but strayed back too much to the Moore era, even though they had some serious scenes.
The opening action sequence is the pure, cinematic EON-Bond that audiences had missed for six long years. I went with some friends and we really enjoyed it, despite it's flaws in logic and bending the laws of physics. Could Bond really catch that plane midair and get in it? Of course not, but the audaciousness of him leaping off the cliff after it and actually getting it is something audiences grew to expect from EON's Bond. Had this been a Craig entry they would have written it so he would have thrown out the pilot as the plane was beginning to leave (shades of Tim on the seaplane in LTK) and escaped that way. I also enjoy the bungee jump. It was another audacious stunt audiences had come to expect and the only problem I had with it was if Alec had already gotten in by another method, why didn't they BOTH get inside that way?
The digital title sequence was brilliant with the falling Soviet icons being destroyed by stiletto heeled women - a great design motif combining Fleming's themes of sexuality and lethality along with symbolizing the "decadent west" helping to destroying the old empire. Some had issues with the pistol coming out of the women's mouth. I though it perfectly reinforced the twisted things Fleming wrote about in his novels - eroticisim combined with potential danger as well as common double crossing and disguise.
Famke was a great addition to the pantheon of venomous females of the EON films and I could tell she really enjoyed the role. She was even colder than Bond and of course totally immoral. Her getting aroused after murdering those workers (and strangling her lovers) was the type of sick behaviour Fleming would have come up with. I really like the look on the general's face after the machine gunning - ("wow, this is one screwed up bi**ch...").
Natalia is one of my favorite heroines. She's a modern, competent woman who does not suffer fools and stand's up for herself. It's great in the train scene where she scolds him to figure out how to get them out while she frantically works on the computer. I also love the line "What is it with you and moving vehicles?"
I enjoyed Boris. I knew someone like him once (not as quite over the top), and though I would have liked to have seen him get his comeuppance, I would not go so far as wanting to see him die. Boris on the other hand, certainly had it coming to him.
Sean Bean is a good actor and though I thought he was fine as a 00, it bothered me how his character was written. He came across just a little too droll and suave when to me he should have been angry and menacing considering the whole point of his plan.
Wade's character was fine. I think they were going for a new version of Leiter because they figured no matter who they came up with for a new Leiter, people would still have problems with them, so they just invented a new American agent for Bond to interact with. I thought making his character a no-nonsense old but modern, veteran agent who'd seen it all and hated the formal pretense of agents like Bond (demonstrated vividly in the scene when they first meet) was a fresh approach and I liked how he quickly warmed up to Bond when Brosnan demonstrated his seriousness to the job by making him prove his identity via the tattoo.
The idea of having an EMP weapon instead of a sci-fi laser beam from the past was a good modern twist and nice that it educated audiences at the same time to the dangers of this type of system.
Lets hope it's never actually developed (would we really find out if it existed - are those really military satellites being launched?).
The music score. Hated it. The synthesized twaddle sounded like it escaped from a bad 70's film. Tina was the only good thing and was a good choice. They didn't even try to get someone as fine as Barry.
With some reservations (and even the best in the series have some), I always enjoy rewatching GE and for me that's one of the things that determines if it's really a good film.

As a young girl I really looked up to Natalia- not only as a Bond "Girl"- but as a female on the big screen. She is intelligent, poised and I think she gives Bond a run for his money. I know other Bond Girls have been notably "strong" (Pussy Galore, Tracy, etc,) but Natalia is a character who I feel conformable with little girls watching and wanting to be (sans the sex... that is for later in life.) Despite my love for OHMSS Tracy seems a bit too compliant at times. The semi rape-ish moment in GF is disappoint and as young female it was disturbing. With the few exceptions of Moneypenny Natalia is one of the strongest females Bond interacts with.

Well then what do you think of my favourite Bond girl- Wai Lin ? :x

Audacionesness? I would call that jump plain suicidal in the real world. And Bond is a spy in the real world, not Superman or Batman. That jump set the tone for the Brosnan years...the helicopter chasing the motorbike, surfing the tsunami, invisible car...Craig films' stunts are highly improbable, but possible, as Fleming wrote Bond.

Bond is a fictional character in a fictional world that resembles ours closely.

Skydivers have proven that a man can fall faster than a plane & successfully catch up to & get on board it. I guess you missed the video I posted numerous times. 8-)
Chrisisall, I know of your love for the Brosnan years, and I respect that.
But don't try to defend what has no defense. Jumping FROM A MOUNTAIN TOP and catching a plane in free fall is impossible. Someone might have get away with jumping FROM A PLANE and catching another plane. But the stunt in GE is out of reality. In fact, they couldn't do it. They tried it, and couldn't. BJ Worth is on a GE documentary explaining how they failed. They had to do it with a special effect. Accept it. Don't say I'm wrong, because I'm right.
It's also impossible surfing a tsunami. Yes, there are guys who surf big waves, and you can post as many youtube videos as you like, but what Brosnan does in DAD is not possible. It's CGI.
I probably didn't make myself clear regarding the "real world". I'm aware that James Bond is a fictional character, and that dame Judi Dench was not actually playing the head of MI6. The key is your "resembles our world closely". That bit was absent in the Brosnan years, and is fortunately back with Craig.
Jumping FROM A MOUNTAIN TOP and catching a plane in free fall is impossible.
Virgil, best not to make absolutist statements like that. How many impossible things have clever humans MADE possible?
I see no huge difference between catching a plane like Brosnan did & chasing a parkour dude up & over a crane like Craig did.
Both things would have a 99.9% chance of killing a REAL HUMAN BEING in the REAL WORLD.
What? Did I hear you say that the difference is that someone ran about that crane for REAL? Ha ha, not really. Not the way it looked on film. Not after running all out for 5 minutes. Not getting fought for real. Not with NO safety precautions.

Show me a video jumping from a mountain top and catching a plane in free fall, and I'll agree with you.
The crane fight was shot for real in a real crane. There is stunt work, wires, Craig's shots are probably ground level, etc and very good editing of course. But it can be done for real. You don't need to actually fly like Brosnan did to catch that plane. That's why they couldn't do it for real and used a cheesy shot of Brosnan in front of a rear projection screen.
If you see no huge difference between flying and fighting on top of a crane, let's simply agree to disagree.
If you see no huge difference between flying and fighting on top of a crane, let's simply agree to disagree.
Of course there a many HUGE differences, but my bottom line, my POINT is, that if you or I (or most of the people on this planet who are not professional high wire performers or aerial daredevils) attempted EITHER as seen on film in real life we would die. So it doesn't matter which was filmed more realistically or which would be less impossible in real life! )
Okay, I'm done.
Well, not really. What GALLS me is that crappy front screen shot; I could have done a better job selling it in my bloody back yard with an airplane model, a home-made cockpit mock-up & a big a*s fan. X-(

Yes, it is important for me when I see a Bond movie to feel that what I see can be done in real life. Maybe not for you.
And yes, the flying shot is very badly done indeed. Similar to the tsunami in DAD. Ridiculous.

Watched it the other day for first time in ages. Forgotten just how long his hair was! Or perhaps I'm now just so used to DC's extreme crop
I loved when she meets the two Tiger pilots.
"I have a small suprise frrom your friends back at the barracks."
"I think i've gone to heaven!"
"Not yet!"
BANG! BANG!
" I don't listen to hip hop!"
-Casino Royale, Ian Fleming
And I think it suffers a bit on a re-watch because there seems to be a cheap feeling to some of the set pieces and effects.
Bit harsh.. ???:)
