I suppose you must factor in the budgetary restraints John Glen was under...he directed when every penny had to be accounted for...I remember him telling me (at Bradford Film & TV Museum) how he was waiting for the weather to change so he could film a scene on the first day of FYEO...MR had cost a fortune but the money-men had reduced the budget on this one...anyway, as he waited for the weather he decided to film a few close-up shots of hands, steering wheels, button pressing, etc...he turned round, saw the money-men looking at him...they nodded to him and left...he later found out that they were very impressed/happy that he wasn't wasting time and money by doing nothing...
Glen made my #2 favorite movie, FYEO.
The only beef that I am having with him is his very own "old-man" humor which he shoehored in now and then and is pretty proud of when you listen to his commentaries.
If he'd left these bits away, the Moore age would have been even more appreciated by the fans

What you have to remember that before FYEO and after OHMSS there were no special performances. They got thrown out the window. There were intent on making big spectacular movies. Granted Scaramanga had some, Solitaire had a little, even Anya had a miniscule amount.But for most of the seventies the films didn't bother
With Glen we had Melina Havelock, Milos Colombo, Jacoba Brink, Octopussy, General Orlov, Max Zorin, Dr Mortner, Kara Milovy, General Pushkin, Saunders, Franz Sanchez, Pam Bouvier, Dario and even Felix Leiter goes through the ringer (literally)
John Glen worked with Maibaum and Michael Wilson to do the films. Personally they are the second best Bond films. The director brings it out of the actors with a good script.
