The guest at the Omega-sponsored dinner was of course British actor Daniel Craig, who’s been playing James Bond since 2006’s Casino Royale. At the Beekman Hotel in lower Manhattan, the room sparkling with vintage Omega under glass, I sat down at a candlelit table, opposite Craig. He seemed genuinely excited to be among other watch geeks, and as we sipped our Billecart-Salmon champagne, he explained how he bought his first fine watch, a Breitling, when he started earning money.
But his passion for watches really began with the James Bond role, when he bought his first Omega, a vintage Seamaster 300. His most emotionally significant piece is the Omega Seamaster, on display during the dinner and seen in the opening sequence of Casino Royale. When ordering custom-made shirts for his Bond wardrobe, Craig has the “left cuff made slightly larger so I can wear the watch, and the sleeve sits over the watch.”
Now, that’s the sign of a serious watch-guy.
But the real star of the evening was arguably the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean “Big Blue”, released today at the watch and jewelry fair Baselworld 2017. Originally introduced in 1957, the Seamaster traces its roots to the Omega Marine from 1932, the world’s first production wristwatch made specifically for diving, and now one of Omega’s most important product lines. Exactly 60 years later, at the dinner, we got to handle the new Seamaster Planet Ocean “Big Blue” – the first Omega with a case made entirely from scratch-resistant blue ceramic. The watch’s name comes from a vintage Seamaster from 1972 that Omega devotees call “Big Blue”. Oversized, with a blue dial, it was the world’s first “diver’s” chronograph in which the stopwatch functions could be fully operated under water.
But the new watch is in fact an evolution of 2013’s black ceramic Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, and the full case, dial, bezel, and even the strap’s folding buckle are made of ceramic and are completely scratch- and fade- resistant. Creating the modern Big Blue’s blue ceramic color was no easy feat. Fabricated in-house using high pressures, hours-long plasma treatments, and high temperature sintering at 1400o Celsius – it demonstrates Omega’s industry-leading expertise in the material.
Made for world travelers, an orange hour hand indicates time in a second time zone on the blue ceramic dial’s orange colored 24-hour ring. Water resistant to 2000 feet, the helium escape valve is designed for saturation dives and prevents the watch from exploding upon resurfacing. There is no denying that Big Blue is a serious divers watch.
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean “Big Blue”Omega
Some might find the colors garish, but the dial and bezel’s blue and orange colors are highly functional. Infused into the blue ceramic bezel, orange-colored rubber highlights the critical, 0-to-15 minute region that is used to alert divers of their last 15 minutes of oxygen supply.
Colors change the deeper you plunge into the sea. Orange quickly converts to a light olive tone, while blue is the last color to remain visible – until a depth of 275 meters. Combined with the luminescent “broad arrow” hands and hour markers, the orange and blue colors result in the best possible contrast for divers’ visibility and safety.

Well it was not as easy as you may think. I could not source the parts for the Black faced PO 8500 separately to put them on my PO TI. Although I was quoted about £1K for both Dial and Bezel parts. However Omega said the watch had to go back to them and strangely being a Titanium PO they would only fit blue TI parts to it not the black ones. Also if I sent the black steel they would not replace the case and bracelet with TI either (I did try both ways)
So I went with Plan B - I had a Black PO Steel already and bought another Blue PO TI good condition used (I have one already but I actually really like the Blue PO as well so was not going to use that one). Found a reputable centre prepared to do the swap of face and bezel (however I wanted to keep the serial numbered calibres with its respective case so its a real face and bezel swap not just swapping over the calibers and bezels).
The swap will cost about £150. But I will be left with a Blue face Blue PO which I will keep for a while to see how I like the swap. Then either swap it back or if I like it sell the Steel Blue faced PO (at the going rate of a steel not Ti version with its new unique face lift) to recover some of the cost of the second PO TI I bought.
Net result will be about the same cost if I was able to buy the parts and fit them - just a longer winded way of doing it.
Should be back this week I will post a picture when it arrives

You don't know the half of it I went to the Christie's 50th Auction and thought I would put a bid on the real one but the ruddy thing went for £157K!!
It always bugged me I bought the steel like most thinking it was the screen used one until Omega was busted in the auction listing. I had also bought the Blue TI (off the back of the rumour he was going to have a Blue TI watch). In Skyfall he did have blue (AT) and TI black (PO) but not together in the same watch!!
Over time I fell in love with the weight (or lack there of) of the TI. Over the years it ate away at me and then finally last month having explored all the options and not being able to find a decent PO TI and a good price i thought screw it i will just swap the faces and bezels on the two I have. Lo and behold the very next day another Blue face PO TI came up at a great deal so i bought it and dashed it over to the service centre to swap it with my one (I had become attached to it - yes really).
So the two went in a few weeks ago and I will see how things go - as I said worst case I can always swap it back, sell it on etc - time will tell but it will be a unique piece and SA that's for sure
Some may call it dedication - others stupidity but if it makes me happy well why not - life too short as they say.

I wasn't quoted for the TI case or bracelet (though you can buy bracelet seperately for about £1k) basically they would only fit like for like. When I tried to buy them they said the watch would have to go back to Omega to have the serial number added to the new case. But as they would only replace like for like and I was never going to get a Ti case and bracelet fitted to a Steel version of the same watch. Believe it or not Omega don't like you screwing around with their watches. Hence the route I have taken.
I did try just swapping bracelets but for me the subtle difference between Steel and Ti was more noticeable with Ti bracelet on Steel case (strangely not so the other way around). So I gave this a punt. Interesting thing will be how the Ti sets off (or not) the black and matt dial and bezel - will it be too dark? Time will tell. Anyone who owns a Ti will know what I mean.
Still I have never let a word like No get in the way of achieving a dream or what I want

If anyone's wondering what the Vintage Black Matchless Craig blouson looks like, here it is . It's very nice indeed, the natural beige colour just didn't suit me at all. This is a very dark jet matt black.
Not a screen accurate Brunello Cuccinelli but I think it works for me.
I have that one as well and love it. It has the contrast against the Brunello chinos that I think Matt S would approve of.
Haha, yes, the contrast is nice. You could still wear it with less contrast, like with trousers in the colour that Daniel Craig wore with his jacket in Spectre. There just needs to be enough contrast so that it couldn't be mistaken for a suit (like Craig's outfit was).

Don't know if any of those are still available somewhere. If you find one, it's a great alternative. The screen version appears to take on more of this color in the interior scenes to my eye.

It is Brunello Ccucinelii. Code as above. I picked it up for a lot less and it is a great fit. I recently got the BC gaberdine trousers also, but they are out getting lengthened. It will be interesting to see how they go together. Either way its a great jacket, fantastic material and very light. I like it a lot.

I saw this very same jacket, as part of a suit, available (until recently) from Neiman Marcus. It was being sold at a hefty discount, but still in the $1,500-$2,000 range. Perhaps some unsold suits will end up at their Last Call outlet locations. But the jacket definitely jumped out at me as it had the correct pocket configuration and was very close in color.
