In a perfect world you are right.
In the real world, there are people using these pics and infos for creating replica clothing to sell (Madagascar Shirt) replica props to sell ( happened here a lot of times with the Argentines) and so on.
These copycats are the reason why many people here ( including myself) are very careful with what they post here.
I am recreating an Octopussy Faberge egg for 7 years now with a lot of help from my friends but I am thinking once - twice - thrice before I post a pic here - sometimes intentionally blurred to prevent too many details.

The idea of maintaining a promise wasn't lost on me Miles… That is an obvious point… I was speaking on the concept of doing the research oneself.. and eventually identifying something, but yet not sharing the information because you had "worked so hard" and weren't going to just give it away… (which was mentioned before in this discussion).. Thats the concept I find hilarious for a collector's forum.. For one, its a hobby.. we are identifying random things.. Some of the comments in this thread are a riot.. like they think they've found the cure for cancer or something and they are guarding their research…. But in the end all they did was identified what socks 007 wears..
Really ? Then go buy his socks )
I thought the reason for not giving the information you asked for was clearly explained...

Some people take their hobby very seriously.
Some like replicas and copies, others have to have the right item, some prefer to only collect genuine screen used stuff.
You state the "worked so hard" bit in a somewhat mocking manner. Yes, people do actually work hard at researching their hobby. As I've previously said, some times it takes time, patience, on occasion money too in order to find out what something is or where it can be obtained.
Take the Q scrabble mug, a relatively commercial product which non the less sold out and suffered skyrocketing prices once the cat was out the bag. Same with the RD bulldog.
Some people prefer to get one for themselves before letting the world and his dog know about it.
Even rarer is the monocular from GE. I know what it is. In the last 3 or 4 years I've been looking I've seen 2 on ebay. One I missed out on by a few days after it ended without bids, only to find someone had beaten me to contacting the seller only HOURS before.
I hold no malice against the winner. He did what I was trying to do. It was nothing personal, and no doubt we'd both do it again in the circumstances.
Now with an item so rare, and yes it's sought after by us sad collectors, why would I tell you, and yes I'm talking right at YOU now, about it?
Would you point out a fifty pound note on the pavement to someone else?
What I find even more hilarious is when people like you find it funny that someone has a hobby they enjoy. Yes we're all collectors in this section, we collect all sorts from costumes and cars to props and film production material. Some collect call sheets, others dolls, some posters.
But how do you not get the concept of wanting to fulfil the desire to obtain rare and hard to find items by being a little bit selfish and sorting yourself out before blabbing to the world?
And now I've took the time to research said rare item, contacted the right people, tracked the item down and negotiated a good price I'm now going to get on the phone to you so you can swoop in and take the prize?
And if you think I'm a selfish bellend (feel free to think as little of me as you like as I'll still think less of you) only this week I've let one guy know about a hard to find item, and provided plans of another to someone else, both FOC without any expectations or hints at rewards or returned favours. I've done it purely because both people are decent nice human beings.
I also agree with Markus on showing off too much. I love showing my work here, but I've seen, and had myself, those pictures used by others to profit from my work. The QoS DBS, the GE Arkangel mines, other here too have had their work copied.
Oh but we're not supposed to get annoyed are we, after all, we haven't worked that hard on stuff have we, and we're all collectors after all.
I guess in your odd mind having a common interest or hobby automatically gives one the right to steal other's work and efforts, and abuse the trust and friendship of people who have entrusted me with insider information?
I'm pretty convinced that MFisher here, with due respect of course, hasn't identified anything on his own and doesn't know what it feels when someoene grabs the last piece of something right in front of you just because you made the information public. The other thing is that researching is a bloody difficult thing, it's not only browsing ebay and forums like ajb007 because that's actually just looking for already answered problems. It requires asking the right people, making phone calls, going around the city and looking in outlets, warehouses - that takes time and somtimes money. Me myself I haven't identified a single thing to date unfortunately but I would love to, I just have not established these kind of connections I would need and as a student I just don't have the required resources to do that but I'm doing what I can.
With that being said I think you're one of the people who think when someone finds an extremely rare item, let's say a Zara shirt from Skyfall (best example for me because I've been trough a lot because of it) and buys it for 30$ from a seller who has no idea what he's selling, one should be obliged to resell it to another member for the same price, right? Because that's what you paid for it, so that's what it's worth - paying 300$ for it would be ludacris in your view. The time spent on searching for it and the fact how much it's worth among collectors is absolutely irrelevant I assume. Same goes with sharing information regarding some items and you will never understand it, unless you will once identify something on your own - I wonder if you will be willing to share some info before you get your hands on said item first.

The knife is eight years old, was released to the UK market specifically and didn't sell. The maker discontinued it. I have only seen one in three years of searching, and that had a different blade and bolster finish. I don't have one, and at this rate, doubt I will. I was lucky enough to see the screen used knife and there were no back-ups as it was originally going to be used in QOS, and was replaced at the last minute as shooting of the scene took place on location. To top it off, the handle slabs were modified by production.
If anyone wants to throw their teddy out of the pram because I won't share what I know as I want to cut down the odds of me getting one, then knock yourself out, I don't care. I spent hours trying to find out what it was and even more time contacting those who did. Eventually my hard work paid off and I built relationships with people who worked on the film and they shared the details of this and many many more items besides. The contacts that I know who work on Bond films pointed me to these people, they did so in confidence, and so I was accepted by the other people as reliable and trustworthy. It took work, loads of work and loads of time. I had nothing to offer them, just my sincerity and genuine interest in what they did.
Now anyone who moans about not getting this information for free is being childish in the extreme, especially when a simple search on these boards and my posts could have led you to the knife manufacturer as easily as hitting less than twelve keys.
I've given out loads of information on here, utterly loads, and would never hold back if asked politely. But anyone that thinks it is their god given right to know this and that and is unwilling to take the smallest steps in finding out themselves, has no place in this community, and certainly has no place questioning those that do.
Can't fault you Jeff and Jonathon, and I believe in the main, you are both preaching to the choir. However there are still the odd individuals around that think that all should be handed to them on a plate. Recently there was a fabricator here who was having trouble finding a particular pattern fo a prop he was working on. Now this is not a prop that I intended to reproduce, but one that I am looking fwd to acquiring a copy of from said fabricator when complete. So I thought I would help out with a little research which ended up going back to the early part of the last century, but find it I did and not just a representation but the exact item. I didn't sit on this but sent it directly to him. Other times I will sit on information if I have a vested interest in the item. I patiently waited for an example of the TB book recorder to come around and I snapped it up. Who would have thought that the hardest job was yet to come in identifying the book in which it sits and I'm still not there.
So it all comes down to the individual circumstances regarding a particular prop as to how the info is disseminated and obviously I would be far more disposed to share with someone with a proven track record and trust than someone with a dozen posts who has not been seen to visibly contribute themselves.

Perhaps we are all talking past each other… For one.. I am in no way mocking this hobby.. If I were I would not visit this site. I genuinely enjoy the aspect of collecting. My points were fairly straight forward.. One, if somebody identifies an item.. realizes that it is rare.. and holds onto that information for a bit until they can source one for themselves.. I totally get it.. Absolutely get it.. Said that already.. clearly… Made no commentary in a negative light against that practice… My point, which I think was misunderstood, was that collecting and identifying gear, clothing etc is clearly a passion here.. Thus you have this knowledgable base of members who enjoy discussing these things.. What I just found odd is when a mindset exists where someone has worked hard at identifying something.. and it isn't rare so sharing the information (in my opinion) isn't going to keep that person from picking one up themselves and advising fellow hobbyists is only a testament to that person's dedication.. That in doing so they only gain a level of elevated status for their efforts and keen eye.. I didn't get the concept of working so hard to learn something and not wanting to tell like minded people.. Simple as that.. Doesn't bother me either way in the end… Hardly the one "throwing teddys out of pram" here.. I think a lot of offense has been taken out of misunderstanding my point.. Which perhaps wasn't made clearly enough.. In the end I enjoy stopping by here.. I am impressed by the sheer dedication of some of the participants here.. They clearly spend a LOT of time hammering away at this stuff.. And I genuinely applaud you for it.. Hate that it appears a few of you think I were bashing the idea of collectors enjoying a hobby.. Or how my very simple comment was twisted into me thinking it was ok to steal others' work ?!? (which was a really out of left field tangent to allege from my comment ) Sigh… delicate bunch

Well that I'd agree with, but you didn't make that clear with the previous posts. If it's a readily available item, and you aren't betraying a confidence, then sitting on that information for the sake of oneupmanship is quite sad. I agree, and I see it quite a bit. Not on here as such, but on other forums.

You got upset because you couldn't find out the manufacturer of the knife...a VERY rare item to find...then you go off on some tangent about easily identified and found items...in the latter case I've not known anyone on here hold back from identifying the item - probably even linking to it or a place to purchase it...sometimes before that person has even bought one...so I'm at a total loss as to why you got your knickers in a twist ?:)
'Ere mike, could you send me your 16 digit card number, expiry date and that little 3 digit one on the back of the card?
Thought as we've all got one that makes us collectors, right? And as they're pretty common, seeing as we've all got one, I thought you'd not have any issue with handing over the info?
What I just found odd is when a mindset exists where someone has worked hard at identifying something.. and it isn't rare so sharing the information (in my opinion) isn't going to keep that person from picking one up themselves and advising fellow hobbyists is only a testament to that person's dedication..

Only thing I'd add here is that if it's a common item and easy to find, the vast majority of us would already know about it. Casino cards, tea towels, diecast db5's, they're pretty much ten a penny.
Other than that, hats off to asp's post, I dare say even higgybum would agree with it.
Nice try with digging out the hole though mike, I'll chuck down a rope. Hang on* a minute.... there's a saying about handing a guy enough rope....
Off to get ted back in the pram while I peruse the general arrangement for a working piton gun, and no, you can't see, you'd never understand them anyway, got writing like a blind doctor.
It wasn't the knife specifically Miles.. The discussion turned to collecting in general.. Never once did I say I was confused as to why someone would keep that info secret.. Obviously a few here have issues with basic reading comprehension.. I said.. quite a few times now.. that when an item is rare.. I get the need to stay quiet.. And MiniGeff just has an axe to grind period.. for a guy to play violins on an internet forum about how he's sooooo depressed he can't even make casino chips any more but suddenly he's seen the light and now he can.. well.. he's a drama queen.. so I am going to dismiss his comments as those of a teenage girl who just needs attention.. Someone just needs to change his tampon I believe
Tempted to suggest Sir miles close and delete this thread.
There is nothing of use in it, no new information nor discussion worthy of the term.
While MFisher perhaps could have acknowledged the fact that when in quicksand, don't wriggle, he did try to back up the offense and that should have been the end of it.
Reminds me why Merkel and Hollande face such an impossible task this weekend and why we face potential oblivion.
But that may raise this thread and its spat, to a level it doesn't deserve.

I would also request closing the thread + additionaly banning the newbie, offending Jeff was out of proportion in every possible way. The only girl who needs a tampon change is you MFisher, especially that you seem to be, let me guess, less then 20 years old.
Im just glad a lot of the main identifiers of Bond stuff I can call good friends, though I've yet to want something that wasn't readily discussed on the boards, im just grateful you fellows share -{
