Kudos, chrisisall. Something that's often forgotten on the endless DAD-bashing bandwagon. There are many things that can be nitpicked about that (or indeed any other) film, but Brosnan's performance isn't one of them (although IMHO his best Bond performance was one film earlier).

To be honest...perhaps your right..
But caught between those two powerhouse Bonds - ie Dalton and Craig - he was found wanting.I was a devotee of the Dalton years and found with Brosnan - where did James Bond go?
But its not entirely his fault - his directors could have been better...
1. For Your Eyes Only 2. The Living Daylights 3 From Russia with Love 4. Casino Royale 5. OHMSS 6. Skyfall
Pros:
Cool Hovercraft Chase
Graves Parachute Jump
Awesome Sword Fight
John Cleese as Q
The Virtual Reality scene (not a fan of the idea, but the scen is excellent in MI6)
Ice Palace (if there's an ice hotel, I can buy this ice hotel - someone rich would do it.)
Excellent Car Chase
Rosamund Pike as Miranda Frost
Cons:
Halle Berry
Gene Alteration surgery in Cuba
Awkward sex scene with Bond and Jinx
Madonna Song
Madonna Cameo
Invisible Car (although other gadgets on the car are good)
Awful Laser Scene
Jinx is the worst agent I've ever seen (since Rosie in LALD!)
Terrible CGI
Windsurfing scene
Bad Plane Scene
Moneypenny and Bond scene
She isn't really required to do much acting. It would matter more if her part was more significant, but as it I think she's pretty innocuous as our friend chris says.

Sorry but when the scene is written around you, when the director gives you crummy lines - you are required to do some acting. She may not be RADA trained but she is required to do some.
Is funny how Severine gets the same amount of time as Verity and doesn't stink the place up..

I didn't say she wasn't required to do any acting - I said she wasn't required to do much acting. Madonna's part in DAD is so minimal and inconsequential that I barely noticed how well or poorly she did her lines, which is why she's innocuous to me. Severine, on the other hand, had a much more significant role despite her brief screen time (and Bérénice Marlohe pulls it off beautifully), so I don't think the comparison is particularly apt.
• Brosnan turns in one of his better performances
• The first 15 or 20 minutes are among the darkest in any Bond film, presaging the Craig era
• The main title sequence is outstanding – a world away from Maurice Binder’s arty nudes
• The long-haired, bearded Bond cuts a strikingly incongruous figure in Hong Kong
• Bond’s treatment of the arrogant South African is genuinely funny
• Rosalind Pike’s over-the-top performance as Miranda Frost shouldn’t work but does
• The fencing match is superbly choreographed
Cons:
• The CGI
• The science-fiction elements, which fail to convince, as usual
• The plot is basically a rehash of Diamonds Are Forever mixed with elements of the Moonraker novel
• The “gene therapy” plot strand isn’t very convincing
• An invisible car is borderline insulting to the intelligence
• The scene where Bond fakes cardiac arrest makes no sense
• The title song is the worst of the entire series
• The overall tone is inconsistent — the film can’t decide whether it wants to be a noir-ish Craig-like spy thriller or a Moore-like romp
• A lot of the dialogue consists of groan-inducing double entendres (though less so than Tomorrow Never Dies)

Was there really any need for Madonna to be there? - she's one of the most recognisable faces on the planet. Were the producers pleased that she could do it?
Would the film been better for her not being there?

Still believe it's very underrated. I think once we get out of the Craig era (which by the way, don't get me wrong, I'll love), we'll be more accepting of a colorful less serious Bond film.

What I don't quite understand is how many fans actually like MR a lot but most fans seem to despise DAD.... that's like loving apples but hating applesauce.

MR has a consistent tone, and I think it's much better paced. The locations are better in MR. There are many similarities between the two films, but I think a lot of Moonraker is much better done.
Agreed; consistently silly. )
MR has better photography, way better music, and better set design, but DAD has a way funnier villain, and Brosnan & Pike.
DAD wins for me. -{

Putting it on right now!
Haha. I prefer Moore over Brosnan, and Dr. Goodhead is one of the best Bond girls. Rosamond Pike has looks, but I never liked her character. And Halle Berry is just terrible.

Sorry, having too much fun with DAD to debate this presently!

There was going to be a Jinx Spin off, but luckily that Idea was shot down.
I don't see it as a horrible film at all. The biggest mark it has against it is that it's not really a James Bond film.

They're pretty bad, but I'd throw Mary Goodnight into the mix as well.

I honestly don't think it would have made any difference either way.
