what draws you to this character? reading your posts you all seem straight laced...bond is far from that. growing up I wanted to be like him... still do. I have two fairly dangerous jobs; security/surveillance. the other, I am a second generation horseman. I like to shot guns, archery, skydiving so on. yes I smoke and drink, but I workout like crazy! that's what does it for me...the thrill seeking! beyond the books and film. so how about you?
I'm motivated by my duty

I remember being a Ten Year old trying to re-enact the Scene in DAF where Bond climbs the Outside of the Whitehouse, but on a Bunkbed in my Bedroom -{
Removed from him. So he has to use his intelligence and guts. He is a man of
Honour, staunchly loyal to his friends. These are attributes that I admire and hold
True to myself.
Although my interest in "Bond" is not just the character himself, but the villains
And sense of adventure those wonderful books and films contain.
I'm nothing like Bond, very unfit, I don't smoke or drink ( have done in the past).
Love a bath, hate a shower. Hate coffee love tea.
As I grew older and read the books I started to learn more about the character. Fleming's Bond. His vices and his flaws. The darker moments. It just added a new dimension to this facinating man.
He's as much a hero today as when I first saw Moonraker. Long may his legacy continue in all our lives. -{
I love the fact that this English gentleman spy globe-trots around the world foiling the plans of genius level villains, it's just fun )
If I have any similarities to Bond then it is more the literary one.
I have an office-based job like the literary Bond does for most of the time, but a few times out of the year I get to travel a bit with work, go some interesting places and so on, work on projects out of my comfort zone (nothing dangerous).
I rarely drink really, but when I do it tends to be a "good" drink or a "good quantity" of drink so to speak, I don't smoke, but I do work out and have a nice watch )
I like fast cars but don't own one and I like to be at least reasonably well dressed.
I also like to be as Gentlemanly as I can with my conduct, a trait which unfortunately nowadays seems to be dying out.
+1 We are not at all dissimilar Spoff {[]
As for Bond, well of course as an adolescent hetero lad Bond was thrilling. He jet sets within high society cultures, plays in casinos and golfs (I had just taken up golfing then), drives great autos, skin dives and skis (I also skied then); was a tenacious fighter, survivor and got to eat expensive cuisine. He was also an English spy with a Scots background and even though both my maternal and paternal grandparents were from Scotland I was always an anglophile (as are a lot of Americans). The really strange thing is the fact that not only do I share the authors' first name (which was a family name), but that I even had the same taste in food, drink, tobacco, clothes and sports.
Bond is a fantasy, a silly concoction of implausible nonsense (Martinis, Girls & Guns) that would only seriously appeal (on THIS level) to the most arrested adolescent, potentially anti-social, sex & violence fixated peeps on the planet, IMO. )
Am I right?

Oh don't blame him... maybe he had lectured him. :v
There is literally no-one else like James Bond. In cinematic history, there has never been a consistent series concerning one character that has lasted as long and remains a huge box-office draw.
Sherlock Holmes: (the closest comparison) Older than Bond, of course, but much less consistent. At present Holmes is enjoying a resurge, thanks to the BBC "Sherlock", the US "Elementary", and the Guy Ritchie films starring Robert Downey Jr & Jude Law... though he will always be popular (there's no police like Holmes, after all), there are twenty year gaps in his popularity.
Matt Helm: did just fine in the 60s (four movies), then faded in the 70s (one TV series)... rumours of his comeback...
Tarzan: box-office poison for the last 30 or 40 years.
Hercule Poirot: as with Holmes, not to be discounted but there's no way a film version would challenge Bond.
Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt: Will die off soon... then no doubt revived...
Star Wars: arguably has out-grossed Bond, in a much shorter time-frame. Perhaps this is the yardstick to measure against: Bond essentially created his own genre, and Star Wars has done the same. Each has had competitors and imitators, and has outlived them.
I Couldn't agree more.
Same here Red, particularly about reading the books, they really do expand the character.
You're absolutely right, Bond really does have everything.
