People are still suggesting Cavill? Let's not forget the basics of casting Bond. Cavill is associated and tied up with the iconic character of Superman and chances are he'll appear as Solo in more than one UNCLE movie. Cavill's chances of ever being Bond came and went; he will never be Bond.

I agree. Bond has either been played by people who haven't previously had highly successful film careers, or were big television stars. The Bond films don't need to get a big name star to sell tickets.
I could see AT Johnson - he has a distinctive look and his eyes seem to elicit the appearance of someone who has been through tough circumstances - like Bond would have. Standen looks good too. I agree Cavill is out of the running due to his future commitments and cost and I just think he's a bit too good looking for Bond as I thought Brosnan was.
Hello Blackleiter, long time no chat. Since we're doing all this alternative casting, I am curious about your take on the two African American Felix Leiters.
Do you prefer Jeffrey Wright or Bernie Casey from alternative Bond, Never Say Never Again?
Very different approaches and missions for the two Felix actors.
And yes, Cumberbatch would be a great 007 villain. Would like to see the villains stay younger and more vigorous in the modern era. He'd be more exciting as a young Blofeld type, living it up in a glam Swiss Alps chalet/main lair hangout, petting the Persian cat, feeding it live goldfish, instead of the older guy Charles Gray, Donald Pleasance kind of characterization.
Cumberbatch could play a rather good David Dragonpool from John Gardner's Never Send Flowers -{

I can see only one man playing James Bond. Lets se, what was his name again? Oh yes Daniel Craig!!
Untill either Mr Craig or EON say otherwise, he IS James Bond!
Harrington - too young. Cavvil established and too well known now. He has also said his chance camd and went. Cumberbatch - Too establidhed Could be an MI6 ally. Idris Elba - Could be an amazimg baddie, or CIA ally, but he is the same age band as Craig. Too old to be a future Bond now.
Any future actor considered down the road will be an unknown or virtual unknown now. They would also need to be young enough to carry four possibly five films to avoid Sir Roger syndrome. (As great a Bond as the others, but he was too old for AVTAK.)
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

I happen to like Jeffrey Wright quite a bit as Leiter, but Bernie Casey is actually my favorite version of the character. He has the build and physical stature to appear to be able to hold his own against anyone threatening him or Bond, but he also radiates the charm and good humor that reminds me of the way Felix comes across in the novels (race aside). Not that Wright doesn't display a certain amount of charm himself, particularly in Casino Royale, but I think Casey works better and I would love to have seen the chemistry between him and Craig if they had shared the same Bond film era.
Would Luke Evans be a good candidate? He'll be at least 40 when the next Bond is cast (Born 1979), but he is British, a good actor, has an interesting look, is tall (6 feet - 183 cm) and seems athletic. He may also be on the verge of becoming too famous. So far he is best known for large parts adventure movies (The Hobbit trilogy, Immortals, The Three Musketeers) and hasn't yet done very well as a lead.
But his age probably isn't the most controversial issue. Will the fans accept a gay actor in the role of James Bond?
I can't remember who said it but I remember a quote about, you didn't have to be
a great actor to play Bond, just a good one. so I'd say any good looking, good
actor ( British) can do it. ) sadly my time has passed too.

I've seen him in a couple of things (The Hobbit movies and Dracula Untold) and he struck me as a potential candidate for Bond. I was not familiar with Evans, so I had no idea he was gay. However, now that I know it doesn't matter to me one wit, and I would hope that most Bond fans would feel the same way. That might just be wishful thinking on my part, but I hope not.
One problem is that as soon as an actor gets big, casting directors start looking for people that resemble that actor, so that eventually there's a kind of sameness going on across films.
Bond needs to break out of that look. And too many people don't qualify.
I've seen some actors in the background of BBC productions where I've thought, "That person could play Bond." But they're never listed in the credits for me to say who exactly they are.
Of the folks floating around right now, none really strongly appeals to me. One or two might work. Adam Raynor, for instance, has some qualities, even if in some photos me makes me think Hugh Laurie and Robert Downey, Jr., had a baby:
They should look at Adam Rayner next time they cast Bond. He seems OK to me, but perhaps a bit too ...... Pierce Brosnan.
By that I mean: charesmatic, but average actor. Athletic, but no very tough-looking and generally very modelish.
I know what you mean. The problem is all of the younger actors -- and he's actually pushing 40 -- have the same generic suburban upper middle class look, or they resemble actors I'm already tired of seeing, like Robert Downey, Jr., Tom Cruise, Leonard DiCrapio, Ryan Gosling, etc.
Whoever they cast as Bond has to look masculine but weathered like he's been in the real world, as opposed to spent his days pumping iron in the gym and taking creatine or hormones. Old school masculine. He also shouldn't be pretty. Bond is handsome. The problem is the choices are very limited by these constraints. Today's "actors" tend to fall into either the pretty underwear model type or the obviously villainous type (though sometimes they cross over).
I don't buy into the "a good actor can become the role" nonsense when the role is iconic. Either the man has what it takes or he doesn't, and then on top of that, he has to be a good actor.
The actor mentioned on this thread who has the most distinctive look is Cumberbatch, but he isn't particularely masculine.
I think Rupert Friend (Homeland, The Young Victoria, The boy bith the striped pyjamas) is a good candidate. He is British, 33 years old, 6'1'' tall, a good actor and not really famous. He plays a regular on Homeland and has been in (sometimes even starred) in good, but modestly successful movies. I think his look is the right kind of mix of distinctive and leading man looks:

With better clothes and a more sophisticated hairstyle, he'd look fantastic for Bond!
Cumberbatch is too famous and too good of an actor to play Bond. His acting capabilities are far above all the Bond actors, though Dalton comes close in a different way.
Right nationality, good age (32), good height (183 cm) and good acting skills. But a blonde Bond - it would never work :v
Seriously: he's an interesting candidate, but I'm not sure he looks rugged and tough enough. While his hair colour doesn't disqualify him, it's not a plus.

Great line SF,
And from James Bond to all his cinematic women since the '60s:
