Magnoli Spectre Mock Turtleneck FINISHED!

What's the best, currently available budget alternatives you guys have found for the N.Peal mock turtleneck? I've found a few, but they always seem only available in black or navy. What have you found???

Kind regards,
Magnoli

I haven't tried this brand personally, but this definitely fits the bill for a budget alternative, and with a 365-day return policy, it seems hard to beat -

Bond44, that one looks great... but they've only got the XL in charcoal! :(

The other thing is the fit... we want a nice slim fit. The Sierra Trading Post one looks too baggy.

    Oh well, the quest continues...

Bond44, looks good. Too bad shipping to the US is so high (25GBP). Good thing I'm not a sweater person.

This might be my winter wear of choice. Too warm now, and wearing shirts anyway.

Since there doesn't seem to be anything to fit the bill, I may see if we can do a run of less-expensive alternatives ourselves...

Charles Tyrwhitt has a nice looking roll neck... While not a mock, per se, it looks like a nice approximation. And slim fit.

Stopped by my favorite shop UNIQLO today. A few viable alternatives for the Spectre N peal sweaters:

    20150605_153005_zpso9ywu8jw.jpg
    100% Cashmere rollneck - AUD$110

    20150605_152735_zpspl0l6b5o.jpg
Extra fine Merino wool rollneck - AUD$50

I usually wear a size Medium, and I sized down to Smalls to achieve the fitted looks. Still very very comfortable.

They also carry a crew neck Cashmere sweater in Turquoise (AUD$110). An excellent alternative to the Skyfall N Peal lodge sweater.

My idea right now is to make a slightly more "shirt" alternative... something that will have the same look, but you can just throw into the wash and now worry about ruining. I'll keep you all posted...

Tony, if you decide to move forward, can I offer the suggestion of offering these in standard sizing (i.e. - S, M, L,...) instead of your usual MTM? Some may want to size down to get a more fitted look vs. some who may want a more relaxed fit. This seems hard to estimate if using your measurement form. Personally, I've had some bad luck ordering from your site as the items I've purchased (two Quantum Jackets and a Quantum Cardigan) have not fit well at all, despite using spot-on measurements from my tailor and actual TF garments. The quality and details are superb, but I'm still not sure where things went wrong with the sizing.

    Kind regards,
    Craig

In a few months as fall clothes hit stores I think budget alternatives will be plenty. Most clothing stores are going to carry mocks. Heck, I had one in charcoal that I forgot I even had that I didn't wear because I thought they were out of fashion :))

That's the plan. If we go forward with this, they'll be available in S, M, L and XL, just like our Henleys.

Looking for mock turtleneck alternatives in the stores will likely produce decently accurate results, but I would be more than interested in getting a true replica from you Indy, especially if the price is similar to the Henley's. Love the idea of making it like a shirt in standard sizes. Personal, I live in Florida, so i would love to see the sweater available in cotton. Keep me updated because im willing to put in an order before they are ready so I can get the first batch.

Indy, I'm not really a sweater person, and California has been too hot the last few years for wool, so a cotton "shirt" version would interest me as well.

cmdr_bong, the Uniqlo sweaters aren't too bad. Pity their stuff has never fit me well. Off topic, but would you know if the tailor who made your MI:3 suede jacket replica a few years back is still around?
  • Indy MagnoliIndy Magnoli Somewhere in the PacificPosts: 426MI6 Agent
Not sure if that last question was directed at me, but we are working on the Spectre Suede Jacket right now...

Ohhhhh. The Jacket too. Im sure your still sourcing and number crunching, but keep me updated. I'm very interested in the price you can get on these two items.

Indy, back around 2010 on filmjackets.com both cmdr_bong and Mantis mentioned having an MI3 jackets made. Mantis's jacket was quite inexpensive. I think it was an eBay tailor.

I have had 2 makers attempt the MI3 jacket. The first one is just a seller on ebay based in India. I was very new with the whole customer tailoring game back then, so looking back now I wouldn't recommend using him. His work is passable at best. The second is another ebay seller based in the UK, but the manufacturing is in Pakistan. His work was sublime, but unfortunately he is incommunicado of late. The Suede jacket he did for me was very high quality. In fact, now that I had acquired a genuine Belstaff Ethan blouson, I, along with most pundit from filmjackets.com, would agree that the replica is more authentic to the screen-worn version than the Belstaff. I may send him an email to see if he would respond, as I'm sure he can knock a replica of the JV out of the park.

Please do. I'd be interested to see what he could do, if interested. Thanks.

Indy, any updates on the "Westminster Mock Neck"? (Have to call it something, right?)

I bought one of these in the HoF sale for £25:

Also noticed that John Smedley do a very similar mock turtle neck in Merino wool £60 cheaper than the N Peal:

Sounds good. I hope you also consider the blue version as well.

We'll see how the charcoal comes out first. It's tricky doing this in cotton as the cashmere has more stretch, so that small neck-hole could be an issue. Our designers say the neck needs to be made larger, but I'm having a prototype made in the exact size of the N.Peal regardless. I'll post news here hopefully within two weeks.
  • Indy MagnoliIndy Magnoli Somewhere in the PacificPosts: 426MI6 Agent
Ok... here is the initial prototype in cotton:

    spectre-tneck-proto1_zpszdu9hddi.jpg

    Some things to note:

-The neck size can stand to be increased without ruining the look. The one shown here is the same measurement as the N.Peal Medium, but is a bit small to get the head through. It's plenty snug on the neck, so I think it's safe to make these a bit bigger.

-The color needs to be a little darker... not much, but I'd call this more of a dark grey than charcoal.

-There are a few details that I'm going to tweak, but these can't even be seen in photos, so not much sense in pointing them all out.

All in all, I'm quite happy with this as prototype as an all year, easy-care alternative to the cashmere original. The next iteration should be just right.

    Kind regards,
    Magnoli

Oh, this is nice and in cotton. Very excited about this now. I agree about the neck, given the different material, it looks way tighter than the N Peal. My only suggestion is that it looks too long and loose in the waste. As I think you are going for ready to wear sizes, anyone can just get that detail worked out by a tailor, so I would understand if you left it long and loose rather than short and fitted to allow personal tailoring. Just my two cents. Can't wait to grab one of these. Any idea about price range yet that I can add to my Spectre budget? :D

Yeah, I'm going to double check all the measurements before we start production. As for price, these will likely be in the range of $60-$75 (shipping included).
  • James BrosnanJames Brosnan Posts: 865MI6 Agent
    Oh, that's a good price, especially with the SA look in a more wearable cotton material (was huge deal for me living in Florida). Fantastic work. -{
