Every Bond actor should have at least one bad movie.

Absolutely_CartAbsolutely_Cart NJ/NYC, United StatesPosts: 1,740MI6 Agent
Breakthrough movies establish the actor, but a bad movie can equally test their merit.

Of course, Dalton and Lazenby never had the opportunity to have a dud, we can see how the other 4 actors handled their relatively less acclaimed movies.

Connery, on the record, said he didn't like his later Bond movies. And it shows he played them with resentment. A GF-like or even a YOLT-like performance from Connery could've saved Diamonds Are Forever.

For Craig, QoS is the neglected middle sister, but it shows he can act, even in a movie that's practically a rough draft script. If his next 2 movies are great, we'll have a great filmography for Craig but we'll also see how he courageously handles a shitstorm.

With Moore, I mostly see him as consistent in character throughout (aside from FYEO and MWGG, where darker scenes were demanded). Moore plays the same character in MR/AVTAK as he does in TSWLM, himself.

With Brosnan, all I have to say, is it takes a lot of guts to play James Bond in a movie like DAD. While his post-GE films are cult classics by some fans, they generally haven't achieved classic status, so if anything, most of his tenure was dealing with stuff he didn't want to do.

Plus, having 1 bad movie per actor makes it easier to rank the movies. Because I don't want to have to put a good movie on the bottom of the list.

Diamonds are Forever made shedloads of money. I remember Connery saying "I like the script" for Diamonds. Mankiewicz backed him up saying how he enjoyed all the other characters

Unfortunately CVraig handled a shitstorm when he was first announced. The shitstorm happened online. I wonder if any of the other Bonds can handle "CraignotBond" and all their crap. Rightly, he ignores it

Roger Moore never changed - his jokes got worse. Love him.

"his post GE films are thought of cult classics by some fans" No, they are not

Perhaps I am being too hard on him.But precisely what went wrong in GE continued to go wrong throughout his career ie casting choices, directors until we end up with Lee Tamahori. I agree he didn't have much help.Maybe I should go easier on the bugger

His post Bond career has done well.

Craig is unique in that his sh1tstorm happened when he was announced and not a frame of footage was recorded. Add that to the internet mayhem and the hate that eruputed, makes it a miracle he didn't back down there and then. And it got much worse when the press release happened. Never in the history of any actor announced for a major role (even Lazenby) has a sh1tstorm on this scale ensued. The fact that his first film not only exonerated him, but elevated him to such an epic status that not even the negativity surrounding QoS could quash it, makes him a seriously great actor. Any sh1tstorm that happens now could never match up to those first few months after he was announced as the next James Bond. That man has serious resolve that has already been proven far beyond that of the other Bonds.

Exactly. I think even the people who hated the movie admitted Craig's acting was great.

But if Quantum of Solace were Craig's first movie, he wouldn't be an icon.

Hoe can QoS be Craigs first movie - part of the plt is revenge against Vesper (or who's behind her). How can it be if she doesn't exist?

Because we're going by the general public approval and not a niche of the Bond fanbase.

To sort of ride on M's statement about Quantum in the movie, I have to ask: How could it be that everyone has seen it, yet nobody remembers it?

We may never know for sure, but I agree with you to the extent that Quantum of Solace -- had it been Daniel Craig's first outing as Bond -- probably wouldn't have had the same impact on his 007 portrayal as Casino Royale did.

Although Casino Royale is generally regarded as a significant improvement over Die Another Day, it succeeds because it redefines Bond in a way that feels familiar, yet different. It maintains the scope and emphasis on action (not unlike Die Another Day), but transplants a richer storyline and emotional core that had been lacking from the series up to that point. This was an environment in which Daniel Craig could truly play to his strengths.

Assuming Quantum of Solace had been released following a six-year hiatus, I could imagine critics praising the more "serious" or stripped-down nature of the new Bond, but reversely I feel like fans of the series would have felt betrayed by the overt attempts at adopting a Bourne movie aesthetic. I also feel like Quantum of Solace lacks the assurance of a director like Martin Campbell, who had already proved to audiences with GoldenEye that he is perfectly capable of reigniting the franchise, as well as introducing audiences to a new and more assured 007.

While I like it, nobody I know (aside from core Bond fans) even remembers what the movie was about. If my observation are an outlier, let me know.

I only think QoS is disliked by Bond fans, actually. As it feels very generic, which clearly works with most people to draw them into an action film.

I'm a hard-core, die-hard Bond fan and I loved QoS very much and consider it a superior film to SF and a worthy follow-up to CR. I find it intrresting how some here think that Bond purists would tend to dislike it considering how the whole reboot was a departure from the staight and narrow of what made (makes) Bond, Bond.

regardless of whether you consider QoS bad or not, it was a messy situation (not having a full script) and Craig handled it well. And it showed as much of his work ethic as smash hits like SF did.

and Craig get a level of respect from me that Connery won't get (considering how bad he flubbed DAF)

Craig's QoS didn't have the Aston, didn't have the swim trunks scene, or him getting his 00 badge, so yeah, had that been the first, or a film with that kind of merit (or lack of it) first, then yeah, he wouldn't be regarded as iconic imo. Craig's buff appearance helped gain interest for CR.

Harking back to the title of the thread, Craig is indeed notable for scoring a hat trick.... :p
