TND takes place over 2 days???

Haven't posted much here in a while, but I'm watching TND and it's got me wondering. The admiral says M has 48 hours before the fleet are in position. I've never noticed that line, but Bond does a hell of a lot in 2 days, and I was wondering if he could actually do all what he does in 2 days.

So, on the first day, he gets the mission briefing (let's not forget this is sometime around 10am). He then flies to Haburg, meets Q and gets all his gadgets. That night, he goes to the party, then spends the night with Paris.

Then the next day, let's say with a start sometime between 8 - 9, he infiltrates the printing press, goes back to the hotel, has his scene with Kaufman, does the car chase in the parking garage, then he goes to the air base, presumably somewhere in Asia. They then fly out (also - Wade had no idea what Bond was planning to do that day, so he's had no time to prepare any of the stuff for him) over the sea near Vietnam, does the search on the ship, gets captured on the boat and then taken to the Carver building in Vietnam. They then escape, and have the bike chase, have a shower, have their fight scene in the bike shop, contacts their navy, then get prepared and find a fisherman at will take them out to wherever they're going, then they get their boat (this all presumably takes up quite a lot of time as they say they've looked everywhere) and still get in the stealth ship at sunset. That means he does all that on the second day in about 12 hours - is it even possible?

I have been confused by that since 1997!
The flying time alone from Europe to SE Asia would have taken 12 hours.

He did do a cool plane stunt in GE, so yeah.

Broz's 007 was a Superbond, but I guess that just makes me love him more.

Yep. The first half's not bad, but the second half has almost literally no story and everything diminishes in quality from the first half. The action sequences are sloppily directed and edited (including the very overrated motorbike chase), the dialogue's worse (and it was already crap), and even David Arnold's score takes a turn towards nothingness, relying on the Bond theme way too much.

Don't think so- here's a couple of tracks from the second half: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEKufi4TlXU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1WwvcSVvEk

It didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the film but I did think
The idea of the fleet getting to China in 48 hours a bit of wishful
thinking. As it took two weeks to get the fleet down to the Falklands,
so I'd guess it would take a month to get to China ? Even if it wasn't
    on a slow boat. ;)

M gave Bond 48 hrs. So he HAD to do it in that timeframe. :D

ah ha, this is the threat I was looking for. Thanks MillenniumForce

    So as I was saying:

I never really thought about it before MF posted this thread, but the film appears to take place over 4 days. Perhaps during the 11th hour script revisions they added an extra couple days to Bond's mission and forgot about the original deadline. I actually prefer my 4 day theory to total impossibility of Bond accomplishing so much in 2 days.

The main clue which no one else has mentioned is when Bond arrives at the US airbase in China he says he got the encoder "yesterday morning in Hamburg" That fact alone would put him at Day 3 thus exceeding the 48 hour limit.

Day 1: Crashing Carver's Party. It's time for a station break. Paris visits him later that night.
Day 2: Steals encoder from Carver's safe. BMW car chase. Finds Paris dead.
Day 3: Arrives at the airbase. Halo jumps to Devonshire. Gets captured and then later escapes on motorcycle.
Day 4: Teams up with Wai Lin to attack the stealth boat.

That's my best guess at the timeline. There's no way Bond could still be on Day 2 at the airbase in China.
    My current 10 favorite:

The extra time comes from delays ordered from the PM in scenes that must have been deleted.... 8-)

Maybe the fleet was in Hong Kong for the official event of handing over HK to China! :)

Although I guess you're right with the idea that
They could have been there for the handover ceremony.

Haha - for some reason I was thinking this handover occurred in 97 (I'm clueless if TND was supposed to be based in 97 though)

I always assumed the navy would have been deployed to survey the Devonshire's original route, and Admiral Roebuck - "You have 48 hours to investigate" means that when they send in the fleet, the fleet is being ordered to cross international waters after the 48 hours. So, the ship would have already been there, and the messages Bond and Wai Lin send their respective governments are not to fire at each other, instead the stealth boat.

So it takes perhaps 3-4 days.
