Memo to Daniel Craig: Keep It To Yourself

Greetings everyone.

I felt compelled to write after I read Craig's recent comments that he would rather "slash his wrists" than play Bond again.

Lets be crystal clear about this: I am not saying Craig does not have a right to articulate his feelings. Without question, playing 007 is perhaps the toughest role in all of movies. The pressure, the expectations, the typecasting. There is no denying that it would be an assault on anyones nervous system.

Wasnt it Pierce who said it was like being the king of a small country?

And, of course, Craig is not unique. Every Bond before him has been ambivalent about playing the role...with one glorious exception: good ol' Uncle Rog. Roger LOVED playing Bond. So much so that he played him in one film too many.

And eventhough he undoubtedly felt the same trappings of the role as Craig did, Roger had the qualities of diplomacy and discretion.

And it those qualities that Craig is lacking. I bow to no one in my admiration for Craig's portrayal of Bond. But I am frankly sick and tired of his attitude towards the role. Hasnt he been on the record that, in effect, he's been trying to quit the role since he started, but they wont let him?

Does he not realize that there is a new Bond movie opening in a couple of Weeks? Its called SPECTRE. Im sure he's hears about. If I was Babs and Michael Wilson I would bring Craig into the office and read him tbe Riot Act. No way to promote a movie like that.

Do I protest too much? You bet I do. Guilty as charged. And I freely admit it. And I will tell you why.

I have been a true Bond fan since 1972. Bond is the only thing in pop culture which I am fanatical about. And so every new Bond film is a time of excitement and hope.

To wake up this morning and read my current Bond would rather kill himself than play the role again...on the eve of a Bond release...well,I dont mind telling you that just stuck in my craw.

Once again, its not his ambivalence I object to, its the vehemence in his language.

Daniel Craig might deny it, but he is in the business of fantasy-making. And as an actor, he should be aware that maintaining the illusion of the fantasy is a key to the fans of the series.

My first response when I read Craigs comments was to to be as honest as he was:

Give me a break.

I apologize for my rant. But that was NOT a headline I wanted to read on the eve of a new Bond film.

"A gun. And a radio. Not exactly Christmas, is it?"
