Does this music have a name? You know, after the casino and it is very dark and we see Brosnan go up some steps to look at the helicopter, there is this lovely, melancholic tune only lasting a minute, as silent actors enact a play.

That always struck me as a very strange scene in GoldenEye (from the very first time that I saw the film on video in 1997) as it kind of seemed out of place in a Bond film, as did the music, as lovely as it is. I wonder does anyone agree with me?

I also thought it was strange. Is it there to show the essence of Monte Carlo? I've never been there, though Monte Carlo never seemed to me like an eerie dark place.

Yes, I meant to say in my last post that it must have been regarded as "mood music" to convey a little of the local flavour of Monte Carlo and not just rushing off to the next scene or country Bond is to visit. It stands out among the bond films as a scene showing something different; love it or hate it!

The whole thing seemed out of place to me, not because it's a Bond film, but because of what I expect Monte Carlo to be. Is that music to represent all the sad souls who lost their money at the casinos?

Yes, I see your point. As I've never visited Monte Carlo I can't really comment. A look at some You Tube videos might provide the answer though...

The music was first heard when Bond pitches up in his Aston and sees the Ferrari there, so it could well be shades of the scene in OHMSS where Bond pitches up in his Aston and sees Tracey's sports care there, hence the melancholic, poignant undercurrent.

There may be a lot of questionable music in the Goldeneye score, but I really enjoy all of the Monte Carlo stuff - the Casino scene and the bit with the mime, and I also enjoy the electronic cue which accompanies the theft of the Tiger ('A Little Surprise For You' on the album.) I think the melancholic strings give it a classic feel, which is rare in the Goldeneye soundtrack. The dark and eerie mood of the scene with the mime has never felt to me out of place, but rather intriguing and interesting. I really like it.
