Probably the longest gap between movies with an existing Bond actor.

What have they all been doing these last two years?

Disrespect to the fans who create those big grosses.

Four years is a lot of time, true. Unfortunately, it takes that long nowadays for a big production like a Bond to come to fruition. Two years, and QoS felt disjointed and rushed. Three years, and SP's third act suffered. That extra year of rewrites is the difference between a solid script and a somewhat unfinished script. It's no coincidence that the truly good CR and SF had those four years of development.

You are joking about SF I guess, after four years they got us the most stupidly written Bond film ever with the biggest plot holes imaginable....

With capable people it takes two years for a good Bond movie. QOS wasn't considerably weaker than CR because of the two year gap but because of the writer's strike and the choice of director and editor and theme song.

I've discussed in lenght the so called "plot holes" of SF, and I disagree completely. SF is a solid movie in my book. QoS was weaker than CR because it had a weaker script, and all a weak script needs to be solid is time of development. Rewrites. Of course CR had the benefit of using a Fleming novel as basis.
And I don't consider QoS weaker because the director, editor or theme song. The editing was fast paced and correct, the theme song doesn't make or break a movie, and the director needs a solid script to begin with, which wasn't there. If there was a strike, all the more reason to take time and not rush a movie into production.

I am glad QOS is loved by quite a few Bond fans. I love to watch it actually. It is very entertaining. In the context of the 24 existing Bond films though I have to rank it near the bottom.

Some of us are happy that he is doing another, and some are disappointed. Well that was always going to be the case. Let's just see what happens. I know the 4 year gap is a tad excruciating, however it might mean the difference between an average film and a great one. This I think will definitely be his last. I know Daniel's words are not to be trusted at the best of times, but I'm willing to wager that it will be no more for him after this one. It's interesting that he said he would like to go out on a high note straight after he made the big announcement. I think you'll find that a new actor will come around by 2020-21. Though I suppose time will tell...

And BJB006, I know you despise Skyfall, however you are definitely in the minority. It's the most successful film in the series, and probably the most acclaimed. It was praised up and down and snaffled a couple of oscars into the deal. I know it is not to your tastes but it is a classic of the series and it's no coincidence that it's huge success, as well as Casino's, came after a 4 year break. I certainly have my own questions about what direction they're going to take with 25, but hopefully the same happens again.

    Just heard on the Stephen Colbert Show last night in the US that Craig is returning as Bond! :) -{

    And he'll beat Roger Moore's 12-year record!

It was a disappointed by QoS, but of course the one before is at the top of my ranking. I wouldn't say near the bottom, but average, as SP. DC saves it for me, his performance alone. With someone like PB, QoS would be near the bottom probably. The weaker Bond movies feel to me as a string of action scenes, whereas strong ones immerse me in the story. QoS is in the former category.

I know I'm in a minority, but I am certainly not alone with my opinion about the film.

What I do not believe though is that a longer gap equals a better film.

QOS would never have been made that way in the Brosnan era or any other era than Craig's. QOS was written (the action) especially for Craig because he is best at physical harrowing stuff like running, climbing, hand to hand fighting, sweating, bleeding.

What "kills" QOS for me is the nonBond feeling that is omnipresent except in some sequences. Craig is at his best physically and probably even acting wise in QOS that I can agree on easily.
QOS still is highly re-watchable like DAF for me, or MR.

Having it at No 22 in my ranking doesn't mean I dislike it, I just don't like it as much as the 21 other films that come before it.

At the time though in 2008, I was disappointed, highly, I even almost, only almost, left the cinema after one hour (we get breaks in the middle of the film in Switzerland at cinemas).

What I do not believe though is that a longer gap equals a better film.

However, it tends to be true since 1974 at least. In order to regain momentum, the franchise needs those gaps. A gap means time for development. TSWLM, GE, CR...They all had those gaps.

Well, it was three years, not four...SP had three years, and wasn't as solid as CR or SF in my book. But yes, I guess DAD with a 10 year gap would be just as bad, I give you that. They might have come up with Bond riding an earthquake or something with an invisible magnetic surfboard... :))

ha ha, that sounds actually better than what we got in DAD :))

Honestly I want Bond 25 to be a huge success at the BO and critically and with the audience and WITH ME of course. I just can't see it right now. My biggest issue is the long gaps. I am 42, I am accustomed to the good old times when a two year gap was a certainty. Even the three year gap between TWINE and DAD felt like an eternity.

The break between Dalton and Brosnan and Brosnan and Craig never felt "wrong" because for the known reasons. And in 2006 it was a new era.
2019 with a new era would have me VERY excited and I couldn't wait for it. But the way it is now, I lost interest until the film hits the cinema or Blu-ray.

Great news! So I think we can now put to rest the filming back-to-back movies rumor then. Seems we're getting him back for ONE final film. Lets hope this final film makes up for Spectre and he does indeed end on a high note.

I think I'll wait for more information ;)
The official Bond website says he's returning for Bond 25 and Craig's comments on Colbert seem to indicate one final film.

Well personally I am glad its all sorted and we know DC will be doing his last hurrah.

Now we have 18 months watching it all unfold which is something to look forward too - I love seeing it all come together and the end result (what makes the cut and what does not).

Of course if Purvis and Wade want any help on the plot I have a few ideas of my own :D

    Here's to the next 18 months / 2 years.

On a personal note I do think that I identified with DC more than any other actor playing Bond. Once he is done I suspect my collecting days will decline drastically - it will be the next generations turn and I will happy to watch from the wings.

    Cheers :007)

P.S At least the 4 year gap gives me time to pay off one Omega watch before I buy the next one from the next installment!! (maybe he could go retro and wear a combination from the previous films and save us a fortune)
My name is Bond, Basildon Bond - I have letters after my name!

Because of this it's unlikely that we have to wait long after Bond25 to learn who the next Bond actor is, like we endured before CR. Those who say Hiddleston is a done deal may very well be right. If not EON won't waste time screentesting and hiring the next actor. Either way I hope and believe we get to learn the name of the next Bond in 2020, after Bond25 has stopped screening in cinemas.
