I just heard portions of Ms. May's speech on TV--when she started waxing patriotic, I was afraid she'd promise to "make Britain great again!"
That's up there with 'reclaiming our country' during the EU ref

So, I've updated the thread title so we can use this earlier thread (originally on the 2016 Tory leadership contest) to discuss the fight for the Tory leadership and the UK Premiership in July 2019. The race began in earnest yesterday (10 June 2019).
So, to start things off, who would you like to see as the new Conservative leader and UK prime minister and why? Who do you expect to be in the final two that go before the Conservative Party membership?

Well at least it's done more democratically now than it was in the days of "the Magic Circle" when the leader emerged after consultations between leading Tory grandees. That process ended after Lord Home was chosen as leader (and the new prime minister) in October 1963.
Home created the new system for electing a new Tory leader under what is still called the Douglas-Home Rules. There have been some amendments to this since then, but it's largely the same system first tried out with the Tory leadership contest in July 1965 where Edward Heath was elected Tory leader.

Well, Sir Alec Douglas-Home is my favourite British prime minister so I do know a bit about him and that period. I just wish he'd been PM for a bit longer, but the choice of the electors did not work out that way, although he vastly reduced the majority of the victorious Labour Party to just four seats. That was no mean feat, considering that he ultimately had less than a year until the next general election was due.

I wonder if Boris Johnson does win the leadership and the premiership with it if he'll finally be able to afford a comb? Come to think of it, maybe that's what that argument with his girlfriend last week was about?!

I am always amazed, how easily die in the wool conservative voters are willing to throw over board conservative ideals, the disgust for a total lack of moral compass in all walks of life - particularly for telling lies - when a candidate of their liking is on the way to the top.

How did the incident at his house impact Boris Johnson's support to be the next PM?
It will be shown in time that it won't have made the least bit of difference to the final decision. It'll be about as relevant as Theresa May's dancing was to the EU negotiations.

Of course he will. A barrister friend of mine on Facebook who is a Conservative Party member posted recently that he hadn't spoken to one other party member who was going to vote for Jeremy Hunt. I think that tells you all you need to know about who the likely winner will be. I can understand why this is as sadly Hunt (another Remain voter who claims to have changed sides) is just more of the same as we have had with Theresa May over these last three years. Understandably, people want to take a gamble on Boris being able to do what he says he will do and take the UK out of the EU by 31st October 2019.
Boris is also a popular candidate in the country at large, though not perhaps in all sections of his party (shades of Churchill there) and is the candidate more likely to win a majority at a future general election and see off the dual threats of Jeremy Corbyn as PM and Nigel Farage's Brexit Party. The alternative is surely a wipe-out at the ballot boxes for the Tories and no responsible party member will vote for that. Remember that turkeys don't vote for Christmas!

I don't think it's true that the media gave him a blank sheet on that. There was plenty of doubt aired in the press about the time of the picture. I also doubt it was from years ago as I don't think they've been together that long?

I was trying to draw the line, that the pic in question has certainly not been done last week.
And only in a conservative world, the pic was anything than misleading and distracting.
But it was a brilliant move from whoever did it and another evidence how much the Murdoch press is interested in facts
