Casino Royale does definitely seem dated. I could never put my finger on why exactly, though.

The whole re-boot idea is so 2006. Unfortunately, IMO, it's still a popular phenomenon. I do like CR, but I always felt rebooting wasn't necessary. There is no where in the novel that specifically states the Le Chiffre assignment was his first after becoming a double O. The filmmakers were just piggybacking on the success of the Batman Begins reboot trend, and following the latest fad. I think Pierce would have been great in CR as his 5th outing. A chance for him to actually get to do a Fleming story.

Hate to be a jerk here, but it seems that the discussion has been stuck on the merits/demerits of CR for quite some time now--far off the original topic, to say the least. I'm sorry, I know it happens often and it's kind of the nature of this forum, but I really get antsy when threads stray off topic for too long. Anyone have anything to say concerning the original topic of the thread?

I think the older Bond idea should be tailored for the actor towards the end of their run, but it should never be about Bond re-entering the service after retirement. At least not for a long time. Bond has quit (or tried to), had his licence revoked or "died" too many times, particularly in the recent entries, and what I'd love more is the return to a standalone mission with Bond in his prime.

That said, Brosnan returning would be welcome in my opinion. I've always wanted that fifth film with him (and to be a stickler Agent Lee, he would have made a better Casino Royale, because the rookie agent angle would be gone! :D )

I really like the idea of Pierce returning to play an older Bond for one standalone mission. This could be before a reboot with a new younger Bond (soft reboot,no more rookie nonsense) I think a number here always felt that Pierce got a raw deal, and always had the potential to be a better Bond than his material allowed. Reuniting him with Campbell and Arnold would be the dream team.

Not me - I think he was an excellent James Bond with three excellent James Bond films. Die Another Day isn't all the bad either, but I wish he had a fifth film and left on a higher note. :D

EDIT: Do you we know that Brosnan is 62 though? He looks good for his age, but I'm not sure I want Bond making out with 24 year old girls. Would probably need another Monica Bellucci... Perhaps we could get Salma Hayek or Catherine Zeta Jones (who, back in 2004, would have made an excellent Vesper alongside Brosnan in Casino Royale).

I like his films, and even DAD has a very strong first half, but I still felt that he had more potential. TND had some great moments but felt weak overall. Perhaps 62 is pushing it, if his 5th had been the older Bond swansong that would have been great.
